Castles & Crusades Classic Monsters, by Kim Hartsfield

Monsters abound. They litter the halls of our collective games like so much debris; wandering monsters, laired beasts, plane walkers, horrid thoughts that linger upon the edge of our imagination. Monsters abound, but as any gamer of any stripe knows, you can never have too many creatures for these a the grist of the mill that is our game.

The early days of gaming saw some of the most classic and amazing creatures. Weird beasties derived from the minds of people influenced by a genre of fiction that was in its prime, when fantasy truly meant the fantastic. Castles & Crusades has touched upon them from time to time, but by and large they have remained in the background. Until Now.

Kim Hartsfield, long-time veteran of classic gaming, brings many of these monsters back to life. Anyone who games with Kim knows he runs a hard-knock game of classic dimensions and epic adventures. Kim revisits the old monster books, MM II and the Fiend Folio, plying their pages for all those classic monsters that mystified and horrified young gamers of every stripe. From the tarrasque to the peryton, from the mighty-small dune stalker to the nightshade, Kim brings it all back to the table.

From Achaierai and Adherer to Zombie
By Ed Pegg Jr
Castles & Crusades Players Handbook is the best Kindle supported RPG around. The first monster manual for the set was Monsters & Treasure, which contains most of the standard RPG monsters (centaurs, trolls, dragons).

Classic Monsters has the stranger monsters. This is just a selection, there are many more: algoid, ascomoid, aurumvorax, babbler, behir, berbalang, boggart, carbuncle, catoblepas, crypt thing, dark creeper, demilich, derro, disenchanter, firbolg, flumph, grue, huecuva, keck, korred, mephit, mudman, nilbog, ogrillon, peryton, phoenix, revenant, russet mold, selkie, tarrasque, thoqqua, vargouille, volt, xsayarsa, yeti.

The write ups for each monster work well, in the clear C&C format. The book also includes pictures of most monsters, but in a slightly flawed way -- all the monsters of a particular letter of the alphabet are described with stat blocks and descriptions. At the end of all the "A" monsters, there is a series of pictures for the A monsters. It isn't always clear which pictures go with each monster. For example, at the end of the T's, there is a picture of some sort of panther centaur, but no centauroid monsters are described in the T's.

So, there are a few minor flaws. But this is a great list of hundreds of monsters for your encounters. Recommended.

A monster manual for C&C
By John J. Thomas III
I think this is the third monster manual for castles and crusades. There is monsters and treasure as the standard monster manual. There is the Monsters and Treasures of Aihrde which is the campaign setting in the works for this game line.. This book has some critters I hadn't seen before many are critters you saw in things like fiend folio's way back when. Behirs and Boggarts cavefishers and coffercorpses, demilichs and devil dogs, ear seekers and flumphs.. (flumphs? whats a flumph? Well now you will know). Haunts and Kech, Were critters like foxwomen, weresharks, spiders and weresnakes. Ogrillions and revenants, sacrecrows and spriggens and much more. This book has more artwork and pictures then I remember from the other books so its easier to understand what you are talking about when trying to describe some critter (example the flumph, I had to look that one up).. Anyways you never have enough critters and this book has enough critters of various hit dice so you could work some in for any level of play. I think it is a very useful book I will find use for in my next castles and crusades campaign

A good addition to Monsters & Treasure
By Gwydion
Physically it is similar to the other hard cover books of the 4th printing. Illustrations are in black and white and some are pretty good.

The book contains many useful monsters, which hail mostly from the old AD&D Fiend Folio. Most of them have lost the comic look, but are still hilarious (like the Flumph), some have differences to their AD&D version and improved mechanics (e.g. death knights have now "mass harm" instead of "fireball"). There is also a version of the Tarrasque inside, which

There is an index in the back (in three parts) which covers "Monsters & Treasure", this book and "Monsters and Treasure of Airdhe". It lists all monsters, their size, HD, AC, attacks, treasure type and XP, and on which page the entry is found.

I gave it four stars as it is not a must-have, but it is well done and I wouldn't miss it.
