The Norman Conquest: A New Introduction, by Richard Huscroft

The Norman Conquest was one of the most significant events in European history. Over forty years from 1066, England was traumatised and transformed. The Anglo-Saxon ruling class was eliminated, foreign elites took control of Church and State, and England's entire political, social and cultural orientation was changed. Out of the upheaval which followed the Battle of Hastings, a new kind of Englishness emerged and the priorities of England's new rulers set the kingdom on the political course it was to follow for the rest of the Middle Ages. However, the Norman Conquest was more than a purely English phenomenon, for Wales, Scotland and Normandy were all deeply affected by it too. This book's broad sweep successfully encompasses these wider British and French perspectives to offer a fresh, clear and concise introduction to the events which propelled the two nations into the Middle Ages and dramatically altered the course of history.

Richard Huscroft read Modern History at Oxford and spent six years as a practising barrister before giving up his legal career to complete a doctorate in medieval history. His previous publications include Ruling England, 1042-1216 (2003) and Expulsion: England’s Jewish Solution (2005), and he now teaches medieval history at Westminster School.

'Fluent, wide-ranging and up-do-date, this is an excellent synthesis of recent work on the ever-fascinating topic of the Norman Conquest. It reveals not only how much was achieved by twentieth-century historians of the Conquest, but how much still remains to be discovered.'

Nicholas Vincent, Professor of Medieval History, University of East Anglia

Not wishy washy - professional introduction
By C. Hogan
This is a survey of the era of the Norman Conquest written by a professional historian. Thus, it presents historiographic background and presents multiple approaches to appropriate topics. If you understand - as History professors do - that History changes and there are multiple viewpoints to issues, then you may appreciate this book; if you do not understand that, you may think this book to be "wishy washy." This book would be, in fact, good for undergraduates investigating the Norman Conquest as it is current and frequently cites primary sources in footnotes. Finally, it is written by a specialist in political history and is largely focused on that (which some may say is a drawback and others might find to be a strength).

Great starting point
By KiplingKat
An excellent political overview of the Norman Conquest and the following colonization (973-1106) comprised of the latest research which definitely opens one's eyes to the reality rather than the legend. It's not a "charming history" focused on telling the stories of individuals, but it covers the important political and military events and as well as touching on shifts in culture, settlement, military organization, and law in decades leading up to and following the Conquest that shaped the centuries following and some of what we still can see in England today. If you want a good overview of this time period before you delve into the details and personalities at work, this is a great place to start. (And the author does include suggestions for further reading at the end of the book.)

Wishy Washy Book
By TheKatieMartin
I would not recommend this book to anyone. Huscroft spends the whole first chapter discussing the relevance of his sources, specifically the validity (or lack thereof) of them. Throughout this time, he more or less discredits his entire book. This theme continues throughout the rest of the book in which he never attaches himself to any idea presented in his book. He presents multiple ideas, but never selects one as the dominant idea or the idea he believes to be the most correct. He is unwilling to commit to any of these ideas so that he is not wrong, which just makes him seem like a con artist. What is the point of buying a book without a clear thesis or direction? (The answer is to make Huscroft money without him having to actually believe in anything). This book could be improved if it included primary sources or if the reader had access to said primary sources. I would not read this book for research because you will be presented with multiple ideas, none of which you can be sure if they are reliable. Don't bother with this book unless you want to walk away from reading it feeling a sense of disdain for reading an entire book without any clear opinions.
