Paradoxes of Group Life: Understanding Conflict, Paralysis, and Movement in Group Dynamics, by Kenwyn K. Smith, David N. Berg

During the past decade, leaders have increasingly relied on self-managing work groups, multifunctional teams, and cross-national executive groups to create the organization of the future. Yet groups are not a panacea for organizational problems; conflicts between individuals or factions within a group often create seemingly contradictory situations?paradoxes?that can prevent the group from reaching its goals.

In this groundbreaking classic, Kenwyn Smith and David Berg offer a revolutionary approach to understanding groups and overcoming the problems that often paralyze group members, the group as a whole, and relations among groups. They explore the hidden dynamics that can prevent a group from functioning effectively. And they show how an apparently paradoxical suggestion?for example, inviting a success oriented group to risk failure, or affirming the benefits of going nowhere to a group focused on moving ahead?can break action barriers, overcome conflicts, and improve group performance.

Smith and Berg offer a different way of thinking about groups that will open new avenues of inquiry for professors and students of group behavior, and they propose many innovative ideas that will prove valuable to consultants, trainers, therapists, and others who work with groups on a regular basis.

Review
"Paradoxes of Group Life is probably the most important volume on group dynamics written within the last twenty years. It has influenced an entire generation of scholars and manager-leaders?often without the explicit recognition it deserves. For those who are ready, this work offers thoughtful, clear and enriching concepts about the most troubling and potentially liberating elements of group life." (Clayton P. Aldefer, Ph.D., ABPP, distinguished professor of organizational behavior, Rutgers University Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology; editor, Journal of Applied Behavioral Science)

"Smith and Berg have provided a new and interesting frame of reference for the study of behavior in groups that is comprehensive, often counterintuitive, and interesting." (Leopold Gruenfeld, professor of organizational behavior, New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations, Cornell University, Administrative Science Quarterly)

"Professionals and academics will find a very intelligent and valuable examination of many classical theories of personality and group interaction. Involving ourselves in the Smith and Berg model was, without a doubt, educational and intellectually provocative." (Samuel A. Culbert, Graduate School of Management, University of California, Los Angeles, and Oscar Ortsman, Departement des Sciences Economiques, Humaines et Sociales, Ecole Centrale de Paris, Academy of Management Review)

"Paradoxes of Group Life is an empowering book of possibilities....It is a book that proposes that we think about groups in a different way and that by thinking in that way, we open numerous possibilities for altering the nature of social systems. It is in illustrating this way of thinking that this book has done a very good job, and it is in the possibilities that stem from this way of thinking that this book gains a power beyond what its immediate subject appears to be." (Jeffrey D. Ford, associate professor of management and human resources, Ohio State University, Contemporary Psychology)

good content - smelly book
By Amazon Customer
the book itself is worth reading. The used copy in 'new' condition I bought was intact in every way except it has a very strong moldy and musty odor. it is sitting now in the sun and open air with the hope that it will eventually be fit to live indoors again.

Constant Companion for Group Work
By A Customer
This insightful book has accompanied me through grad school, two corporate reorganizations and numerous consulting projects. The authors have written an excellent text on the contradictory forces/movements endemic to group life. Their use of paradoxical thought as a lens for thinking about and successfully navigating the territory of group life is both practical and innovative. If you're looking for the usual book about conflict resolution, please look elsewhere. Smith and Berg advocate reclaiming rather than repressing or eliminating the fears and anxieties that define many aspects of group life. Their explanation of concepts such as group paralysis, oscillation, group-as-whole, splitting and individual ambivalence are clear and highly cogent when integrated into a paradoxical framework.

Aptly titled: This analysis is rife w/ incisive insights.
By M. Pardee
Paradoxes of Group Life is a masterful explication of the concepts its title announces. This readable volume will serve the newcomer to Group Dynamics as well as the more experienced cognoscenti. People are often fundamentally ambivalent about ourselves and our participation in groups. Smith & Berg explain these (often unconscious) dynamics with great clarity and force. Treat yourself to this compelling analysis. I highly recommend their important work!

The Immortal Cell: One Scientist's Quest to Solve the Mystery of Human Aging, by Michael West

The extraordinary story of the breakthrough discoveries in cell aging, stem cell research, and therapeutic cloning, and the tremendous promise they hold for dramatically extending human life.
Dr. Michael West has been consumed with the mystery of science since he was as an inquisitive child mixing chemicals in his attic-turned-laboratory. Today, he stands in the center of a controversy so great that the list of those lining up against him includes President George W. Bush.
Once a devoted creationist eager to dispel theories of human evolution, Dr. West was set on a quest to find a scientific solution to the devastating effects of disease and death after the death of his father. He became immersed in the study of cell aging and the discovery of the cellular “clock” telomerase – the mechanism that controls cell aging. His work led him to found the biotechnology company Geron, a pioneer in the field of stem cell research. His new company, Advanced Cell Technology, is the only organization in the United States pursuing human therapeutic cloning research – research in the field of “regenerative medicine” intended to repair damaged and diseased human organs and tissues.
Unlike reproductive cloning, the attempt to clone a human child, therapeutic cloning is a process of growing cells, using a patient’s own DNA that is inserted it into an unfertilized egg cell to create embryonic stem cells, cells that hold the promise of repairing the damage of age and disease – in essence, making the cell young again. The potential for therapeutic cloning to treat afflictions caused by the loss of dysfunction of cells – from spinal cord injury and skin burns to kidney failures and cancer – is enormous.
Part memoir, part adventure story, The Immortal Cell chronicles the breakthroughs Dr. West and other scientists have made in biotechnology over the past decade – and the astonishing potential they offer us to cure diseases and improve the quality of human life.

Amazon.com Review
Human beings have always hungered for immortality. But even in myths, those who find the secrets of eternal life often have to pay a high price. Michael West, CEO of Advanced Cell Technology, has spent most of his career as a biotechnologist seeking ways to make mammalian cells live forever. His successes put him at the center of political, moral, and religious firestorms. In The Immortal Cell, West offers not only a chronology of the emerging science of immortality, but a personal journal of his own path from strict creationist to ardent scientist seeking to shape human evolution. It was West and his cohorts who announced in 2001 that by inserting a person's own DNA into an unfertilized egg cell from a woman of reproductive age, they could create embryonic stem cells--cells that might be able to repair any number of problems for the DNA donor, including burns, cancer, degenerative disorders, and even normal aging. Accused of "playing God," West became one of the central figures in the debates on human cloning and was compared to Osama bin Laden by one histrionic news agent. In The Immortal Cell, West describes both the research and the furor that followed. Though the biology is a little tough for general readers, West does a fine job of using diagrams and step-by-step descriptions to explain his processes of cell culture and manipulation. The debate over therapeutic cloning of human cells is far from over, and readers seeking to better understand the debate will find West's book an unapologetic, one-sided argument in favor of human stem cell research. --Therese Littleton

From Publishers Weekly
West was once asked by a journalist: "Just what does it mean to play God?" The author, whose controversial career in therapeutic cloning has been chronicled extensively by the media, seeks to respond in a brisk memoir that describes a boy who sought answers to mortality in his Protestant faith and eventually took matters into his own hands as a scientist-entrepreneur. He describes his founding of Geron, the first biotech firm to seek a "cure" for human aging, and his decision to leave for his current venture, Advanced Cell Technology. He continues with the media firestorm surrounding ACT's crafting of stem cells from cloned embryos, which plays out under the shadow of President Bush's decision to curb stem-cell research, and finishes with the argument that to ban potential therapies before they are tested is to abort progress in medical research. Along the way, he gives a primer on cell theory, genomics and the basics of aging, but it's all drowned in the thin gruel of a campaign book. West glosses over his embattled departure from Geron in about two pages, citing his messianic calling to deny death, and gives the ACT controversy, one of the most interesting parts of the story, relatively short shrift. To get the full story, one would do better to pick up Stephen S. Hall's Merchants of Immortality, which fills in the holes left by West. West writes like the Big Money science pitchman he is-but many will agree with his position on the necessity for stem-cell research.
Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
The stem-cell debate was the hot science story of 2001, and West cut one of the higher media profiles among scientists conducting stem-cell research, work roundly condemned by Catholic and other churches for its manipulation of the human embryo. To West, this engineering is justified by the prospect that human tissue can be grown from stem cells, and his retort to ethical qualms is the standard argument that the embryo is not a human life. However one regards that assertion, the reader will obtain in this account of his career clear information about what West has done in the lab and in business to promote his biotechnology schemes. Passionately interested in finding the biological causes of aging, West reviews historical research on cell senescence; dramatizes his role in understanding telomeres, the tips of chromosomes believed to act as cellular "clocks"; and outlines the methods of introducing DNA into an embryo. Accessible to the lay reader, West's is a self-confident presentation from the pro-cloning side of the stem-cell controversy. Gilbert Taylor

Tinkering with the atom - now tinkering with human DNA...
By M. Franta
Dr. Michael West is a brilliant man in search of high tech ways to cure catastrophic diseases & pathologies - such as type I Diabetes, Quadriplegia, cancer and heart damage from heart attacks. All noble quests to benefit mankind. The only problem with this is that along with the potential to help mankind with regenerative medicine concepts, therein lies another darker potential. The corruptability of such an endeaver, and yes, there are always those equally brilliant scientists out there who are willing to tweak the bad that generates from the good.
West goes into vague detail explaining what stem cells are, and what the science can acheive in medicine, and cloning. I wish he went into further depth giving examples and photos of what he witnessed under the microscope. If he would have included some slides, I would have given the book a 5 star rating instead of the 4. It is a good book that gives readers a taste of this controversial topic. He further explains how Dolly the sheep came to be in this world, and yes, the sheep was named after Dolly Parton, the country singer, because the sheep was cloned out of a cell from the breast tissue of another sheep.
All this research into the mortal cell costs millions, perhaps billions of dollars, $$$, but in the end, the goal is not to prolong life forever. It's really to maintain the quality of life for all, especially the aged. Dr. West is very compassionate towards the elderly in our world, and it's good to see that somebody is passionate about curing the ails that often accompany old age.
One question that I have for Dr. West is what should the average life expectancy be for people? 100? 110?
Curing hearing and sight loss, kidney failure, liver failure are all good things that could come from recombinant DNA therapy.
But the dark side could promote supernatural human beings; turning engineered cells into engineered people. These 'superpeople' can potentially outthink, outperform and ultimately - wipe out the current natural human race that we have spent millions of years evolving into. If these cloned people reproduced with regular human beings, something called germ-line genetic modification, something terribly wrong could happen. This is one of the kind Doctor's admitted fears.
Our standard of living would become too high to sustain or even achieve. It would create many insurmountable problems the world has never known.
Tinkering with the atom in the Manhatten Project ultimately brought us terrorism as we know it today. Could those brilliant scientists not see the disaster behind the discovery?
Now our modern scientists are tinkering with the human genome project. It is mapped out and published. Scientists such as Dr. West wish to exploit this important and exciting discovery to help mankind, but we must be wary of the ever present dark side of all good creations.
Are we ready to make this scientific leap?
Read the book and ponder the answer...I have no answers at this point---the book contains arguments both ways, but leans towards the pro and dismisses the con pretty blantantly.
Nonetheless, it is a very interesting read, and contains somewhat technical ideas in it, which only encourages me to further research the topic of theraputic cloning and stem cell research.

more self promotion than the discussion of the subject matter
By W. Chen
After reading so many positive reviews, I ordered the book, and expected to learn in-depth insight into the immortality of cells.
I was disappointed. This book is more of the author's personal story of pursuing the goal of reversing aging rather than detailed look into the biological nature of aging. There are tidbits of gems here and there, but the density is low. If you are looking for a serious discussion of the subject matter, this book is not for you.

Brilliant and Passionate
By Ed Roche
Excellent reicital of one scientist's search for the means to prolong human life. I found it to be a very good introduction to concepts such as stem cells and telomerase - areas I had only vague knowledge. But the best part of the book is its description of Dr. West's passion for ending human death and mortality. Dr. West echoes many thoughts I have had myself - man does not want to die! Despite the narrow minded opposition of obsolete religious teachings, science will find the way to overcome and we will reach one of mankind most long soughts yearnings. Perhaps we will lose part of our humanity in doing so, but in my opinion it will be a transformational change that takes us to the next level of life. This book describes one possible approach on this journey.

Physical and natural phenomena depend on a complex array of factors. The sociologist or psychologist who studies group behavior, the economist who endeavors to understand the vagaries of a nation's employment cycles, the physicist who observes the trajectory of a particle or planet, or indeed anyone who seeks to understand geometry in two, three, or more dimensions recognizes the need to analyze changing quantities that depend on more than a single variable. Vector calculus is the essential mathematical tool for such analysis. Moreover, it is an exciting and beautiful subject in its own right, a true adventure in many dimensions.

The only technical prerequisite for this text, which is intended for a sophomore-level course in multivariable calculus, is a standard course in the calculus of functions of one variable. In particular, the necessary matrix arithmetic and algebra (not linear algebra) are developed as needed. Although the mathematical background assumed is not exceptional, the reader will still need to "think hard" in places.

My own objectives in writing the book are simple ones: to develop in students a sound conceptual grasp of vector calculus and to help them begin the transition from first-year calculus to more advanced technical mathematics. I maintain that the first goal can be met, at least in part, through the use of vector and matrix notation, so that many results, especially those of differential calculus, can be stated with reasonable levels of clarity and generality. Properly described, results in the calculus of several variables can look quite similar to those of the calculus of one variable. Reasoning by analogy will thus be an important pedagogical tool. I also believe that a conceptual understanding of mathematics can be obtained through the development of a good geometric intuition. Although I state many results in the case of n variables (where n is arbitrary), I recognize that the most important and motivational examples usually arise for functions of two and three variables, so these concrete and visual situations are emphasized to explicate the general theory. Vector calculus is in many ways an ideal subject for students to begin exploration of the interrelations among analysis, geometry, and matrix algebra.

Multivariable calculus, for many students, represents the beginning of significant mathematical maturation. Consequently, I have written a rather expansive text so that they can see that there is a "story" behind the results, techniques, and examples—that the subject coheres and that this coherence is important for problem solving. To indicate some of the power of the methods introduced, a number of topics, not always discussed very fully in a first multivariable calculus course, are treated here in some detail:

  • an early introduction of cylindrical and spherical coordinates
  • the use of vector techniques to derive Kepler's laws of planetary motion
  • the elementary differential geometry of curves in R3, including discussion of curvature, torsion, and the Frenet-Serret formulas for the moving frame
  • Taylor's formula for functions of several variables
  • the use of the Hessian matrix to determine the nature (as local extrema) of critical points of functions of n variables
  • an extended discussion of the change of variables formula in double and triple integrals
  • applications of vector analysis to physics
  • an introduction to differential forms and the generalized Stokes's theorem

Included are a number of proofs of important results. The more technical proofs are collected as addenda at the end of the appropriate sections so as not to disrupt the main conceptual flow and to allow for greater flexibility of use by the instructor and student. Nonetheless, some proofs (or sketches of proofs) embody such central ideas that they are included in the main body of the text.

New in the Second Edition

I have retained the overall structure and tone of the first edition. New features include the following:

  • 220 new exercises of varying levels of difficulty;
  • 70 computer-based exercises;
  • a new chapter (Chapter 8) on differential forms, parametrized manifolds, and the generalized Stokes's theorem that significantly expands on the first edition;
  • an expanded discussion of the implicit function and inverse function theorems
  • an expanded discussion of quadratic forms and their role in determining extrema of functions
  • various refinements throughout the text, including new examples and explanations.
How To Use This Book

There is more material in this book than can be covered comfortably during a single semester. Hence, the instructor will wish to eliminate some topics or subtopics—or to abbreviate the rather leisurely presentations of limits and differentiability. Since I frequently find myself without the time to treat surface integrals in detail, I have separated all material concerning parametrized surfaces, surface integrals, and Stokes's and Gauss's theorems (Chapter 7), from that concerning line integrals and Green's theorem (Chapter 6). In particular, in a one-semester course for students with little or no experience with vectors or matrices, instructors can probably expect to cover most of the material in Chapters 1-6, although no doubt it will be necessary to omit some of the optional subsections and to downplay many of the proofs of results. A rough outline for such a course, allowing for some instructor discretion, could be the following:

Chapter 1: 8-9 lectures
Chapter 2: 9 lectures
Chapter 3: 4-5 lectures
Chapter 4: 5-6 lectures
Chapter 5: 8 lectures
Chapter 6: 4 lectures
Total: 38-41 lectures

If students have a richer background (so that much of the material in Chapter 1 can be left largely to them to read on their own), then it should be possible to treat a good portion of Chapter 7 as well. For a two-quarter or two-semester course, it should be possible to work through the entire book with reasonable care and rigor, although coverage of Chapter 8 should depend on students' exposure to introductory linear algebra, as somewhat more sophistication is assumed there.

The exercises vary from relatively routine computations to more challenging and provocative problems, generally (but not invariably) increasing in difficulty for each section. Each chapter concludes with a set of miscellaneous exercises that review and extend the ideas introduced in the chapter, and occasionally present new applications.

A word about the use of technology. The text was written without reference to any particular computer software or graphing calculator. Most of the exercises can be solved by hand, although there is no reason not to turn over some of the more tedious calculations to a computer. Those exercises that require a computer for computational or graphical purposes are marked with a computer symbol, and should be amenable to software such as Mathematica, Maple, or MATLAB.

A solid, thorough treatment of multivariable calculus.
By A Customer
I used Susan Colley's Vector Calculus when I took multivariable calculus in the spring of '99. The book is very well written and I would definitely recommend it to anyone, but most especially to those who have a strong interest in the subject and aren't just fulfilling a requirement. Here is why--
When the reader is presented with an mathematical idea, it is nice to know where that idea comes from, and to be given whatever explanations or proofs are needed. An example of where Colley does this is in the chapter on the chain rule in several variables. This is a difficult chapter and Colley does an excellent job of explaining the underlying concepts (with lots of visual aids) where a less thorough author might have simply offered formulas and methods to solve a few specific types of problems.
Also, Colley introduces vector notation which, although at first unfamiliar, ultimately leads to a better understanding of the relationships between functions of different numbers of variables. For example, instead of the notation f(x,y,z,w,...) we have f(x->) (the arrow indicates that x is a vector). This notation, as well as the extensive use of matrices is very helpful and eliminates much confusion.
The visuals are simple and easy to understand, and the problems are appropriately designed, with plenty of very simple exercises for dealing with basic calculations, as well as very challenging and thought-provoking problems which require plenty of thought and help develop good mathematical intuition and visualization.
Overall this is a very good book, and it appears to me that the other reviews on this page come from neither a good knowledge of the book nor multivariable calculus.

a very profound and majestic treatment
By A Customer
Of all the math texts I have ever read, this is the first one which really seems infused with great enthusiasm for the subject as well as with humor. It is the textbook that one would use if one didn't want to just memorize techniques and formulas with little understanding, but wanted to have as deep and as beautiful (not to mention fun) appreciation of the subject as possible without being dragged down in minutiae. The people who criticized it were probably frustrated by the book because it really tries to bring the reader into the almost magical world of multivariable calculus so she or he may marvel at it. But to do so takes a great deal of effort, so people who just wanted to know how and not why would certainly prefer a different text. Being a Oberlin student myself, as the critics were, I understand that in the midst of all their other classes and being confronted for the first time with real math (multivariable is definitely a step up in difficulty from ordinary calculus) they could be frustrated by such an approach. But, I'm not an even a math minor and I was so happy to be able to use this text and not your standard blah-blah, humorless, lifeless, and arcane math text. Bottom line: if you want to understand come here; if you want to just do seek another text.

The best introduction to Vector Calculus ever written
By R. Prabhaharan
The author has written a carefully thought out introduction to the subject whose only assumptions are that you know the most rudimentary coordinate geometry and single variable calculus. From this all the classical subjects in vector calculus are built up using geometric ideas to motivate the definitions of the concepts. Typically the first course in vector calculus tries to get to Stokes Theorem and so on as quickly as possible without explaining what motivated these ideas. Much of the technical apparatus in vector calculus was used in modelling fluid dynamic flows in the nineteenth century, this is where the idea of "vector field" came from. As far as I know, this is the first vector calculus book I've read that defines a vector field, and next to it shows a picture of water flowing out of an upturned cup, with velocity vectors pointing in all directions. Just one picture captures the essence of the definition and immediately renders concrete something very abstract. There are many other examples in the book where a picture is shown of an abstract concept, making the definitions and theorems intuitive.
However, this book is not just pretty pictures, the calculus is built up in a rigorous manner (as far as a first introduction to the subject goes) and by the end of the book you are well placed to read your first book on manifolds and differential geometry. The book is not cheap, but if you think about it in terms of if you wanted to replicate this book you'd need at least 3 other standard textbooks, then its reasonable. Even advanced mathematicians would be surprised how much they could learn by looking at some of the pictures ! This book would be ideal as an appetiser before a main course of graduate differential geometry.

Amazon.com Review
"His thin, claw-like hands were folded loosely on the rug, purple-nailed. A few locks of dry white hair clung to his scalp, like wild flowers fighting for life on a bare rock." Published in 1939, when Raymond Chandler was 50, this is the first of the Philip Marlowe novels. Its bursts of sex, violence, and explosively direct prose changed detective fiction forever. "She was trouble. She was tall and rangy and strong-looking. Her hair was black and wiry and parted in the middle. She had a good mouth and a good chin. There was a sulky droop to her lips and the lower lip was full."

From Library Journal
Chandler is not only the best writer of hardboiled PI stories, he's one of the 20th century's top scribes, period. His full canon of novels and short stories is reprinted in trade paper featuring uniform covers in Black Lizard's signature style. A handsome set for a reasonable price.

Marlowe's worst clients ever
By Whistlers Mom
Published in 1939, this was Chandler's first full length book following a half dozen years of cranking out short stories for Black Mask and other pulp magazines. I can understand why it was well-received, but to me it's a weaker book than his later ones. Was the author having trouble shaking off the dust of the pulps or was he nervous about moving into the Big Leagues?

Part of the problem is that the family poor Marlowe is trying to protect are some of the most unappealing characters in modern literature. Marlowe seems to feel sympathy for old General Sternwood, but I think he's an awful old bastard. As for his two crazy daughters, the less said about them the better.

Of course, being Marlowe, our hero doesn't stick to the job at hand, but branches off whenever an interesting side-line appears on the horizon. He can never resist a challenge and he can never force himself to stick to the task at hand (the one he's supposedly being paid for.) It's what makes Chandler's stories fascinating, but not terribly realistic. A real detective follows the money. Marlowe follows his nose.

Some critics say that Marlowe is a modern-day knight, battling the dragons of corruption. In 1930's Southern California, he has plenty to keep him busy. Prohibition has been repealed and rum-running is only a fond memory, but the enterprising types who made a good living at it have transferred their talents to drugs and illegal gambling and pornography. And the bad, beautiful Sternwood sisters are right in the middle of it all.

There are some good characters, including the Sternwood's forceful old family retainer Norris. Norris is an anomaly in the Sternwood household and you have to wonder how he hooked up with them and why he stays. I also liked gambler/racketeer Eddie Mars. He's a man who operates outside of the law, but with the law's full knowledge and cooperation. He's a crook, but an intelligent one.

Mars isn't bound by any code of ethics, but he knows that violence creates trouble and trouble costs money. He prefers negotiation over strong-armed tactics, which makes him more predictable (and therefore less dangerous) than the low-level grifters who hang around the edges of large-scale crime. They're hoping to pick up crumbs dropped by the big crime bosses, but stupidity and greed bring them down.

A jarring note is the introduction of the pornographer's boyfriend and Marlowe's heavy-handed reaction to him. It doesn't advance the plot and it's not in keeping with Marlowe's tolerant persona. I suspect that Chandler wasn't yet sure enough of his talents to step out of the shadow of Dashiell Hammett, whose MALTESE FALCON created a sensation by featuring the forbidden topic of homosexuality. I've read all of Chandler's books and I don't remember him ever returning to this topic.

It's Chandler and it's good. It's just not as good as his later books. However, it launched him as a legitimate novelist and paved the way for FAREWELL, MY LOVELY and his other great books. Everyone has to start somewhere.

A Great 1940's Detective Novel. Wish I was as cool as Philip Marlow.
By W. Robert
A great 1940s detective novel. It was made into a fine movie starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Just a few questions to be answered within the story: what does Eddie Mars have on the Sternwoods? Where is Eddie Mars' wife? What happened to Sean Regan? Why is Gwyn Geiger blackmailing the Sternwoods? Why is Harry Jones following Philip Marlow? What did General Sternwood hire Marlow to do? What was going on at Lavern Terrace the night Gwyn Geiger was was murdered? Who murdered Geiger? Was it the Sternwoods' chauffeur? Joe Brody? Eddie Mars? Somebody else? How did the the Sternwoods' chauffeur wind up dead in the big black Packard under 30 feet of water off Lido pier? Who moved Geiger's body? Why does Marlow find General Sternwoods' younger daughter nude and drugged at Lavern Terrace? Why does she turn up nude in his bed later on? Read the book to find out the answer to these questions and a whole lot more.

Really, really entertaining
By Margaret E.
I had already read this book long, long ago but decided it would be a good one to read aloud with my husband during the cocktail/chocolate/literature hour. It's even better read aloud. Having said that, however, if you do buy this on Kindle be sure and have a hard copy nearby since there are many, many typos and other mistakes in this version. Whoever edited it did a very poor job but that does not detract from the story itself. In reading it you will have to recall that a lot of what is portrayed is now cliché but at the time the story was written this was probably very original. "Move closer to me, you beast!" for instance. I have to admit that while we read this aloud we had to allow extra time for laughter at lines like that. It was entertaining in the extreme and although one of the murders was never solved I did learn from a PhD friend who taught murder mysteries at a university that when William Faulkner, who wrote the award-winning script for the movie version (I do not recall which one), called Raymond Chandler to ask, "Well, who killed (not going to say here)?" the answer was, "I don't know."
