A Poor Book in the Name of the Poor
By Bradley P. Hayton
Monsma's volume gives a detailed analysis of technology. The tone of his book is not so much the fear of technology, but the fear of the worship of technology, i.e. technicism. It is a much less pessimistic book than some of the evangelical left, and much more abstract, almost too much for the average reader. Using Dooyeweerd's sphere of modalities, the authors outline some excellent guides for both responsible technology and design.

Nevertheless, these authors have the same tendencies as other fundamentalist doomsayers, whether Christian or Muslim. They have a zero-sum view of economics, believe that advertising is really exploitation, economic self-interest is pride, technology causes more unemployment (they would like labor intensive industry rather than capital intensive), and think that the "technology of the rich and powerful" exploit the poor, since the poor cannot afford to implement and use it too. Technology causes increased alienation, and even is responsible for exploitive "fads" which devour on women and youth. With increased technology, people are left with only mundane jobs.

Sometimes I wonder if these professional doomsayers really open their eyes to the world around them. Not only do they misunderstand business and economics, they fail to acknowledge the benefits of their own culture and technology. Millions have been given jobs due to technology; witness the feudalism or Indian society compared to industrial nations. Due to better technology, the poor have always increased their real wealth. Rather than causing alienation, the industrialized technological world has become increasingly interdependent, not only between countries, but between the various trades themselves. With specialization comes interdependence.

The authors fail to acknowledge the human psychological need to change that greater technology and variation in products has catered to. They close their eyes to the windows of creativity that better technology has opened, both in regards to the fine arts and sciences. In my own opinion, these professors should be exported from their cush ivory tower jobs in the university to a Third World country and be forced to pick bananas. They would be happier living hand to mouth and living in a hut without plumbing, electricity, media, and have all bananas they want to eat. They might as well live in the banana republics they adore.

Nevertheless, Monsma, et.al., correctly caution us not to place our faith in technology, a faith due exclusively to God. All technology must be submitted to the will and glory of His purposes. We must ever search the Scriptures to guide our use of technology for godly and just purposes.

Excellent Historical Summary
By Stephen Byrnes
This long-awaited title will interest all who wish to learn about the historical roots of naturopathy, the writings of its founders on a variety of natural therapies, and the modern applications and validations of naturopathic techniques.
Dr. Thiel is well-qualified to author such a book. In addition to his Ph.D. in Nutrition Science from the Union Institute and his doctor of Naturopathy from the International College of Naturopathy, Dr. Thiel is current president of the California State Naturopathic Medical Association. Thiel has also had a number of papers published in various alternative medical journals (including the Townsend Letter) and currently has a paper in press with the prestigious British journal Medical Hypotheses.
The book begins with an overview and definition of just what naturopathy is. Drawing from the writings of Drs. Bendict Lust and John Schnell, as well as the defining Congressional Act of 1931, Thiel presents naturopathy as a drugless, non-invasive, non-surgical, non-medical discipline that should only use natural interventions to correct bodily and mental imbalances.
In chapter two, titled "Naturopathic Philosophy," Thiel draws from early naturopathic writings to demonstrate the basic foundations of the art: Premum no nocere ("First, do no harm"), Vis medcatrix naturae ("the healing power of nature"), and Tolle causum ("all causes," or what makes people get sick). Peculiar to this chapter is the presentation of the nine naturopathic standards adopted by the profession at the Golden Jubilee meeting in 1947. Something Thiel repeatedly draws attention to in this chapter is the importance of approaching the person in their totality and not just their symptoms. Thiel accurately points out that alternative therapists sometimes commit the same error of allopaths: they treat the disease and not the patient. Proper attention to correcting the causes of disease are paramount to the naturopathic approach to health.
What makes this book unique is the effective and thorough "round-up" of early writings on a variety of naturopathic modalities such as heliotherapy, hydrotherapy, herbalism, homeopathy, massage, exercise, rest and sleep, fasting, etc. Thiel has done an outstanding job of finding and organizing assorted excerpts from the profession's founders to define what those modalities are and what their possibilities are in helping others. Thiel then makes conclusions as to how these modalities are still effective today, often reporting on recent studies or research that validate naturopathic techniques.
Most striking, however, is Thiel's stance on synthetic and natural vitamins and minerals. Citing the Golden Jubilee's Standards of 1947, Thiel argues that synthetic supplements have no place in naturopathic practice and devotes considerable space in the book to demonstrating that natural, food-complexed nutrients are superior to synthetic ones. Several of Thiel's published papers on fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and other subjects fill out the book's appendices.
Thiel concludes the book with a warning to the naturopathic profession: "If naturopaths embrace allopathic medications as part of their modalities, not only will they betray their naturopathic foundation, they will cease to be naturopaths. Naturopaths who prescribe medications are telling their clients that they do not feel they can be helped through naturopathic methods. Naturopaths who routinely prescribe medicines are not, in my opinion, being true to this profession." In these days where some naturopaths feel that they should have the legal right to dispense drugs as allopaths do, Thiel's words are quite pertinent and should be heeded.
Naturopathy for the 21st Century should be required reading of all present and future Nds, as well as the lay public who are interested in natural health. In its masterful combining of old and current writings and research on the art and science of naturopathy, the book offers readers invaluable insights into the healing power of nature.

Excellent overview of Naturopathy
By Rich Blumenthal
Dr. Robert J. Theil's book combines old and new practices of naturopathy to teach readers about preventing imbalances that lead to disease, the healing abilities of natural substances, and time-tested therapeutic practices. His easy-to-understand and well-researched book appeals to many types of readers as it strives to educate people on the workings of the human body. Readers come in three flavors.

Most readers will be those who are disenchanted with the deficiencies of the allopathic medical model. (That is, wait for something to go wrong and then see what the doctor can do to fix it using invasive, risky, and expensive solutions.) Many are clamoring for information on how to prevent illness and they have learned that mainstream medicine focuses on treatments and cures rather than education and prevention. This book answers the question, "Why do we get sick?" and answers with natural approaches involving diet, nutrition, vitamin supplementation, exercise, fasting, sleep, and many other non-surgical and non-pharmaceutical modalities. In addition, sections deal with esoteric naturopathic practices such as magnetic and electro therapy, iridology as a diagnostic tool, color therapy, healing powers of sound and music, homeopathy, mineral salts, and mud baths. In my humble opinion, an open-minded reader seeking advice on disease prevention and natural remedies will find a wealth of helpful information whether they wish to chart their own course or become better-informed patients.

The next category of reader is the health enthusiast considering a career in naturopathy. This book is arguably the best overview available and should be required reading for all budding NDs. In fact, it is used as an introductory textbook in several naturopathic colleges. For each chapter there are one or more entire books which the serious student should read, study, and master, but as an introductory overview, I feel this book can't be beat.

The final category of potential reader is the mainstream medical professional who wishes to do more for his/her patients by making a commitment to patient education in the prevention and non-invasive treatment of diseases. Unfortunately, however, none of the information contained in the book has FDA endorsement. Any time a practitioner recommends a non-FDA approved treatment plan and something causes the plan to go awry, he opens himself to a medical malpractice lawsuit. In my more optimistic moments, I wish that doctors will do right by their patients by recognizing the value of the naturopathic approach, but realistically, there is far more money for the practitioner in surgical or pharmaceutical intervention than in prevention or natural treatments. Also, there is less liability by sticking to FDA-approved treatment AND it takes a lot less time to dispense a pill compared to getting a patient to overcome a lifetime of bad habits. So it seems unlikely that the medical establishment will genuinely embrace patient education and non-mainstream prevention practices any time soon.

That puts the onus on the patient to take personal responsibility by becoming a highly educated patient, which brings us back to the concept of naturopathy and this book. Anyone who buys this book, reads it, follows up with diligent Internet research, and vows to mend their unhealthy lifestyles in accordance with they learn, will be taking a HUGE step toward leading a longer, healthier, happier life.

An excellent in-depth overview of classical naturopathy ...
By William Courson
Dr. Robert Thiel, the author of "Combining Old and New: Naturopathy for the 21st Century" is a nationally recognized researcher, scientist, and traditional naturopathic practitioner. I take pains to refer to the author as a traditional naturopathic practitioner as distinct from a naturopathic physician owing to a schism that has taken place between two lines of thought and practice in contemporary naturopathy. The point warrants emphasis as Dr. Thiel and his work are very clearly identified with one of them, and that one is the classical naturopathy (not `naturopathic medicine') of Drs. Benedict Lust, Bernard McFadden, John Christopher and the Lindlahrs. Consonant with the philosophy of classical naturopathy, Dr. Thiel believes and makes a convincing argument for the fact that both basic research and clinical science demonstrate that through natural interventions, the body can heal itself of both chronic and acute ailments.

This very thorough and very readable work embraces both a history of naturopathy from its remotest origins in antiquity, through its development in 19th century Europe, its pioneering work in America and its elaboration up to the present day as well as a survey of the various schools of thought and philosophies within the naturopathic current and an overview of the diagnostic and therapeutic modalities used by classical naturopaths and embracing the whole range of material, medicinal, mechanical and mental therapies.

Well-organized, well researched and yet very enjoyable, Dr. Thiel's work will be useful to several types of reader: the patient who has grown disenchanted with the deficiencies of the conventional biomedical model of healing; the individual considering undertaking training for the professional practice of naturopathy; and both alternative healers as well as the mainstream biomedical practitioners who wish to do more for their patients by making a commitment to their own and their patients' education in the prevention and non-invasive treatment of disease.

The book includes extensive extracts from the works of such luminaries as J.H. Kellogg, M.V. Kulkarni, Royal Lee, G.J. Drews, J.H. Tilden, H. Lindlahr and other early naturopathic educators.

A testimony to its breadth and its depth, this book is recommended for those reviewing for the examinations conducted by of the American Naturopathic Medical Certification and Accreditation Board for the `Certified Traditional Naturopath' designation and has been adopted as a standard introductory textbook by several naturopathic training institutions.

I strongly recommend this work by Dr. Thiel to anyone seriously interested in the field of classical naturopathy and the insights it offers into contemporary health issues. Its technical character does not make it labored reading, and for that reason it is well suited to both professional and lay audiences.

Ho hum
By Ginny
Early Katie Fforde books were wonderful and I got a bit addicted. Unfortunately they are becoming increasingly formulaic, puerile, and worse, redundant. In fact they are approaching being moribund. It is as if the good plots and ideas ran out about 5 or 6 books back but there are stray mini plots and ideas that she is trying to spin out and then weave a few strands into one or two more books. Ms. Fforde needs to go on a long vacation where something really stunning and interesting happens. And she needs to read some books by Elizabeth Cadell, Angela Thirkell, D E Stevenson or the Lucia and Mapp series by E. F. Benson. Then, and only then, maybe a another good book might flow from her word processor.

Another miss for me
By BettyBoop
This book is ok. I would say I was Katie Fforde fan, but the past 2-3 books i've read of hers, this is another miss for me.
I felt like the characters were not fleshed out enough. The male lead is dull and has odd behavioural patterns. One minute he's very romantic and in love and laughing. Next minute hes annoyed or treating her like shes a moron and pushing her away...
The female lead is weird (she's in PR but barely knows how to dress or never wears make up).
The start of the story was somewhat interesting, but as it went on, i found myself really bored! And that made me sad because i'm usually loving cosying up with a katie fforde book and getting stuck in.
This time round i stopped reading a few times and forgot about it and couldn't remember if I finished the book or not.

If you're wanting to start on a Katie Fforde book, i'd suggest Highland Fling or Rose Revived(my favourite) or (my first Katie Fforde book and my second fave) Paradise Fields

Another hit!! Love her
By A Funny Girl
After waiting forever for the price to be somewhat manageable I finally purchased and was so happy that I did. First I must make a disclosure that I am a huge fan of Ms Ffordes work and as such am a tad bit biased. This probably should be a five star ranking for me, but I'm only giving it four stars only because it was a bit slow going for me.

All of her books I normally cannot put Dow. And this one while it didn't take me tons of days or weeks to finish it did take me a tad longer than usual. It took me a little bit of time to get really invested in the characters.

We meet two sisters whose great aunt has died. The aunt had a spot at a type of flea market I want to say (for us Americans) although I am sure I have the wording wrong. Anyway they inherit her items as well as her spot in her market.

Neither sister has ever had any type of experience in the antiquing business, but they decide to fulfill the wish of a dying lady.

The story is about these sisters each in her own way growing from the experience and each finding their paths.

All of Katie Ffordes books tend to have a common thread and that is reinvention. I suppose that is why I am am such a fan as the idea of reinventing or transforming myself or a business is something I'm all too familiar with.

If you have never experienced chick lit by a UK author and u like a good romantic comedy give this a try.

The UK authors books I have read all have such a distinct humor and don't read as they are trying to win an award but are writing for the pure pleasure of a good story. It's pure escapism, which is why I fell in love with books to begin with.

Excellent start to the Sawtooth Peaks series
By Marsha @ Keeper Bookshelf
Welcome to Sawtooth Peaks, Small Town, USA. A town with secrets, and unseen dangers

Hailey had left her hometown about three years ago. She was so certain that the young man she loved would want her in his life forever. They loved each other, or at least she had loved Cole. But he pushed her away and crushed the dreams she had for them. Hailey couldn’t stand to be in the same town with Cole, knowing he’d never be hers so she left. That was a mistake.

Today Hailey has returned to Sawtooth Peak with a black eye, a split lip and terror in her heart. She grabbed the most important things in her small apartment, slipped out of her home and boarded a bus back home to her sister and to the only man she’d ever felt safe with. Maybe she was crazy but she’d only feel safe again once she saw Cole, even if he didn’t want her anymore.

Cole’s life is stifling him. Taking over his father’s bar meant hours inside, going over paperwork to learn the business. He’d much rather be out running through the trees in his wolf. His mother was also becoming a royal pain in the behind as she pushed him to take over the Alpha position that was left open at his father’s death… and to take a wolf shifter as a mate. He knew who his mate was and she definitely wasn’t a wolf shifter. He had sent her away, pushed her hard to leave him behind – it was the most painful thing he’d ever had to do, but she deserved a life better than as his mate. And he could not take the Alpha position without a shifter mate. Basically he was backed into a corner and no matter which way he turned – his own happiness was never going to happen.

There are several wolf packs in the area. And one Alpha is beyond crazy in his need to take over other pack’s territories – no matter who he had to kill to accomplish that. One of the reasons Cole’s mother pushes him so hard to take a mate is fear of this Alpha, because he could and most likely will try to take over their pack since they have only a temporary leader right now. So much was on the line waiting for Cole to make a decision, was it any wonder that he escaped from the business as often as he could.

Today, in the bar’s parking lot he caught a scent, a unique smell that he’d not tasted for a very long time. Hailey. There she was again, across the street and someone had harmed her. As he held Hailey in his arms and let her cry out her fears in his strong arms Cole made a decision. One that would change so much for so many people and shifters.

Running To The Pack is a story full of emotions of all sorts -love, lust, anger, fear, jealousy, envy and pure madness. Cole and Hailey rediscover or maybe reignite their love for each other might be a better description. It’s not easy, it’s not smooth – there are dangers along the way, especially Hailey’s stalker. Their romance is of course sexy, but there is also that second chance to make everything right, no matter the consequences.

Hailey and Cole do get their happy ending. But the threads of this story will continue throughout the series. No there are no cliffhangers, but Hailey and Cole’s story is not done and we will meet up with them again in the next story in the series. I’m making this very plain because sometimes readers (and reviewers) see cliffhangers where there are none, truly. But there is an underlying story line, and of course it is open to develop and grow in the following books. That is a series, not a cliffhanger.

If you love Shifter Romance then I believe you’d enjoy Running To The Pack and the Sawtooth Peak series. I would definitely recommend this story, and I’ll be downloading the next one shortly.

Wonderful! Love This Series!
By Kat
Running to the Pack is actually book one of a three novel series. It can be read as a standalone. There is an ending in Book 2 that is great. But If you want the finale conclusion of Hailey & Cole's and story you need to read the series:
Book1: Running to the Pack
Book 2: Defending the Pack
Book 3: Uniting the Pack I did and I enjoyed every page non stop. Hailey and Cole were highschool sweethearts, but when Cole couldn't tell her any of his family secrets she moved away and went to college. She remains in love with Cole, but agrees to let friends set up a date. Hailey knows after the third date she an Frank haven't anything in common. She tries to tell him, but he refuses to leave her along. He starts stalking her, but when he breaks in and attacks her she moves back to her hometown and in with her sister Olivia. She knows she has always loved Cole and since Cole knows she is his mate and can't give her up. The fireworks begins, because there are a few people who don't want these two together and let's not forget the crazy stalker she left behind. These two really need to work on communicating with each other. I loved the complete series and rated each 5 stars. I recommend this novel to all mature readers who enjoy
paranormal novels. Enjoy!

Monkey: Folk Novel of China, by Wu Ch'êng-ên

Probably the most popular book in the history of the Far East, this classic sixteenth century novel is a combination of picaresque novel and folk epic that mixes satire, allegory, and history into a rollicking adventure. It is the story of the roguish Monkey and his encounters with major and minor spirits, gods, demigods, demons, ogres, monsters, and fairies. This translation, by the distinguished scholar Arthur Waley, is the first accurate English version; it makes available to the Western reader a faithful reproduction of the spirit and meaning of the original.

About the Author
Very little is known about Wu Ch-eng-en (c. 1505-80) although he is believed to have held the post of District Magistrate for a time. He had a reputation as a good poet but only a few rather commonplace verses of his survive in an anthology of Ming poetry and in a local gazetteer. Arthur Waley CBE, FBS, was a distinguished authority on Chinese language and literature. He was born in 1889 and graduated from the Universities of Cambridge and Aberdeen. He died in 1966. His many publications include 170 Chinese Poems, Japanese Poetry, The Tale of Genji (6 vols), The Way and its Power, The Real Tripitaka and Yuam Mei.

Exuberant fairytale with an edge
By N. Clarke
Unlike most people, I didn't come to this book through the TV series - I have heard of it, but I've never seen it (although I do intend to try to find it now...).
This translation covers only sections of the Monkey/Journey to the West saga, but what there is of it conveys well the flavour of the tale without outstaying its welcome. The plot, such as it is, revolves around the priest Tripitaka and his disciples (including Monkey), who have been charged to journey to the West and return with Buddhist scriptures for the enlightenment of China.
The story can, at times, be distinctly difficult to get your head around; superficially at least, it's little more than a succession of episodes involving bizarre monsters being defeated with elaborate magical powers. There is, however, plenty of humour - generally farcical in nature, although occasionally quite dry - and the bickering of the main characters is frequently entertaining. The bureaucratic nature of heaven, in which spirits and deities are assigned strictly hierarchical posts - with salaries! - is amusing regardless of how much you know of Chinese history and society.
However, many of the Buddhist and Taoist elements may be confusing to readers unfamiliar with the basic concepts. Some of the episodes rely quite heavily on outcomes grounded in, say, the workings of karma or the achievement of enlightenment - although most do conclude with Monkey and friends beating up the monsters in question, frequently with the spiritual aid of Kuan-yin and other divinities. But I do suspect that there are allusions and layers I'm missing...
To paraphrase the end-of-chapter refrain, if you want to know whether Monkey and his companions succeed on their quest, you'll have to read the book!

boring and dry reading
By khue
This review is not about the translation, which is great. This review concerns the story itself. As religious allegory, it's kind of interesting. But the story is so boring and predictable. Monkey always wins his battles and outwits his enemies, blah blah blah. The plot is so contrived as to be thoroughly boring. The story of "the journey to the west" was so famed that I was curious and purchased this, expecting to laugh at monkey's antics. No laughter here, just snoring. Do not read this for pleasure, you will regret it. Only buy this book if you have to read it for class. I hear that Arthur Waley's translation is an abridged version of the Chinese original. I can only surmise that the original is 10 times as boring.

This book defined my childhood
By Nicholas Webb
I first recieved this book as a ninth birthday present from an adult friend who lived in Thailand, and upon reading its first 13 chapters the book quickly became my favourite fairy tale. Monkey's absurd arrogance is funny, but, by the same token, his optimism and self-assurance is infectious. He thinks nothing of travelling from heaven to hell and all points in between (Solving problems along the way by banging a few heads together) or of achieving immortality by stealing peaches. The story of how he got his great weapon (A staff used to hammer the Milky Way flat) by essentially being the worst guest in history to a much put-upon sea dragon, is hillarious. The book, suprisingly for one written 500 years ago in a distant land, contains some of the best-timed slapstick comedy I've ever come across. There is even one moment of true toilet humour that will have you reaching for oxygen, it's so funny. The pace kept up brilliantly; the final scene of the books first act, in which the forces of Heaven attempt to trap the Monkey King, has the air of a Keystone Kops episode by way of JRR Tolkein. However, there are also moments of touching and disturbing drama, as Monkey's personality gradually shifts from mischievious to almost evil, until he is imprisoned beneath a vast mountain and begins the long road to his redemption and eventual enlightement.
I haven't even talked about the main plot of this wonderful story, but it is better if you discover it for yourself. Enjoy!
