From Library Journal
Shallow, poorly educated Kitty marries the passionate and intellectual Walter Fane and has an affair with a career politician, Charles Townsend, assistant colonial secretary of Hong Kong. When Walter discovers the relationship, he compels Kitty to accompany him to a cholera-infested region of mainland China, where she finds limited happiness working with children at a convent. But when Walter dies, she is forced to leave China and return to England. Generally abandoned, she grasps desperately for the affection of her one remaining relative, her long-ignored father. In the end, in sharp, unexamined contrast to her own behavior patterns, she asserts that her unborn daughter will grow up to be an independent woman. The Painted Veil was first published in 1925 and is usually described as a strong story about a woman's spiritual journey. To more pragmatic, modern eyes, Kitty's emotional growth appears minimal. Still, if not a major feminist work, the book has literary interest. Sophie Ward's uninflected reading is competent if not compelling. Recommended only for large literature collections. I. Good story. Great writing.
By Ellen Hanson
"The Painted Veil" is the beautifully told story of one self-absorbed woman and what it takes for her to discover joy in loving others. Every novel should have at least one character who changes and grows even half as much as this heroine. (Scene spoiler alert: My favorite scene is the last, when Kitty realizes she's always taken her father for granted, imagines how he must be feeling, and begins - finally - to treat him as a unique individual who has wants and needs separate from hers. When she can finally do this, their love is realized.)

I just saw the 2006 motion picture, and actually enjoyed it more than the book. The screenwriter enriched Somerset Maugham's classic in several ways: Kitty's husband Walter is given more depth such that his growth over the course of the story matches Kitty's. Also enriched is the backdrop. Not only is the Chinese town where much of the story takes place suffering a Cholera epidemic, but the Chinese Nationals are rising up against the British. This plot enhancement cranks up the tension of the story, and allows Walter's character to develop in a more complicated and ultimately satisfying way.

I highly recommend you read the book, then see the movie. You won't be disappointed!

Excellent story about the human condition that is not remotely dated.
By John H.
The Painted Veil once again reinforces to me that there is nothing new under the sun. Maugham's story could have taken place in 2016. I was inspired to read it after seeing the film adaptation, which was an entertaining story in its own right, but completely different in its treatment and outcome. Readers should be prepared for this if they are coming into the story from the same perspective.

The humanity in Maugham's writing is refreshing, the storytelling straightforward, the characters well developed and real. He not only does a splendid job creating a shallow, self-possessed and unlikeable character, but more importantly, convinces the reader to stick with her through the journey of maturity and transformation into a caring human being.

Human character development and spitual growth
By C. Collins
This is a superb book, dealing with multiple themes around human relationships, character development, distinguishing love and infatuation, the transcendental experience, and the meaning of existence. That sounds like a lot but this small book covers a lot of ground.

Through a wide array of characters, Maugham explores the nature of human relationships. There a parental relationships where parents are overbearing and judgmental. Kitty, the protagonist of this novel, has such a relationship with her mother. She eventually marries just to escape her mother's judgments and criticisms. There are also unexamined relationships that are taken for granted and only later are seen in a new light. Such is the case with Kitty and her father. He is a judge and ample supporter for his family. Yet he is a status symbol for her mother and a source of income and support for Kitty. It isn't until Kitty gains in maturity and painful experiences that she eventually is able to even begin a genuine relationship with her father. Social roles of parent, child, mother, son, daughter, and father may often provide a social matrix for interaction but subtle violence and disregard and neglect may characterize the relationships that are seen to the outside world as loving and in fact those who dispense emotional violence and those who absorb emotional violence may never grasp the reality in which they are stuck, and thus characterize their relationships to family as loving when in fact, love is not present.

Growing up in such a home, Kitty seems oblivious to the compromise she creates when she agrees to marry a socially awkward but highly intelligent bacteriologist. He falls for her but she never really reciprocates with the emotional depth of her husband. She is young and self-absorbed and shallow in many ways, yet he loves her.

But Kitty has never given herself fully to another person, she has never been infatuated, she has never been out of control and in constant pain when she is away from her lover. Unfortunately for Kitty, she falls for a married diplomat who is highly self serving and manipulative. Charlie Townsend begins to dominate her every thought and she becomes lost in day-dreams of marriage to Charlie far away from the real world of their marriages. The ancient Greeks believed Jupiter gives mankind wisdom through painful experiences and Kitty is about to be educated. Having discovered that his wife is having an affair with Charlie Townsend, Dr. Walter Fane, is inwardly heart broken but he display a highly controlled exterior. He offers Kitty an ultimatum which has been carefully thought through for it helps reveal to Kitty how shallow is her relationship with Charlie. Walter insists that Kitty join him in a distant city which is being ravaged by cholera. She has no choice but to follow him. Yet this experience is the critical experience of her life as well as Walter's life.

Kitty meets a minor ugly alcoholic British official, Waddington, who eventually becomes her intimate friend and one of her guides toward herself. Waddington quickly picks up that the Fane's relationship is a disaster and he helps Kitty find meaning in her life as an aide in a French Catholic orphanage. He also gradually introduces her to Taoism and the concept of desire and connection being the source of much human pain and suffering. Kitty gradually goes through multiple stages of grief and anger to begin forgetting Charlie Townsend.

At the French Orphanage, Kitty also begins to grow and change in character as she cares for Chinese orphans and interacts with the highly spiritual nuns. Kitty observes that the nuns act calm and loving and gentle and supportive of all humans in all their interactions, but she sees that they are not attached. They are not emotionally bound to the children they serve, there love is a spiritual grace and transference from God to the children. They are willing conduit between God and suffering mankind. Thus they are able to love and let go, they care and then forget, moving onward to the next suffering soul. In this regard Maugham is certainly connecting the sublime nature of Christian non-attachment to the Buddhist and Taoist philosophies of detachment from the world. Kitty has several transcendental experiences, sometimes evoked by great beauty in the natural world or in vast vistas of man's interaction with nature.

Thus Maugham does something outstanding. He conveys how a person may grow in character by pain and self examination as well as how a person learns to integrate or experience the mystery, the unification with the unknown, the wordless and thoughtless mind of God that changes perception.

But like relationships, ever changing and growing, the transcendental experience is never complete or present at all times. Kitty longs for the serenity of the nuns, their spiritual and emotional centeredness, but finds that just like relationships, our glimpses into the mind of God are ever changing.

Maugham has selected to show us that a shallow self absorbed young woman can begin to glimpse the mystery of existence, the flow of pain and desire and attachment out of the human heart. Like the Buddha, she sees a corpse in the road, the reminder of our temporary status on this earth.

The test comes as Kitty realizes that Walter is in pain and that he must forgive her to move beyond the pain. She has moved and grown greatly if she now can empathize with Walter to the point that she sees fully his pain and sees the way beyond his pain. Just as Walter saw her infatuation with Charlie and the steps needed to reveal Charlie's lack of character to Kitty, she now sees that Walter has a broken heart and in his heart bears pain and anger, but more importantly, he is now willing yet to move beyond the pain and anger and move into a state of forgiveness. Kitty has reached the point of maturity that she wants this forgiveness, not for herself but for Walter. She has moved beyond herself absorption, her self definitions, and her own perceptions and like the compassionate Buddha, she sees into Walter's heart and knows how she must be healed.

Unfortunately, life is not predictable and Walter falls deathly ill with cholera. As he dies she urges him to forgive her, something that she needs but also something that she clearly sees that he also needs.

The resolution of the novel shows Kitty dealing with the consequences of her choices, the recognition of her own human frailty and needs, the separation from her mother's bonds, and the initiation of a genuine relationship with her father.

This is an outstanding work of literature, unwinding a profound and complex theme, revealing the nature of relationship to the self, to others, to the Tao beyond. No small achievement.

Master of Manipulating Emotion
By John Kang
It Goes On is an eclectic collection of short stories by D.R. Shoultz, which captures the human (and sometimes canine) condition. Following every day people, most of the tales take place in middle America. There, the pace of life is slower, but the impact of decisions are magnified by everyone knowing everyone. One story has Portal Fantasy elements, and several include dogs. Overall, be prepared to have your emotions pulled in several directions, from hope to sacrifice, despair to redemption.

As a whole, I felt some of the stories took a while to develop, with more “telling” than “showing” at the start. On occasion, I felt unnecessary information slowed the pace of the beginning. However, with the exception of “Their Place,” each story had me full engaged by the middle, caring for (or in some cases, despising) the main characters, and hoping for outcomes. By the end, Shoultz comes to a conclusion which was well worth the wait.

Shoultz generally writes in Omniscient viewpoint with a distinct narrative voice which I hear as Dan Rather’s steadfast intonation. For a few stories, he used First Person. There are a couple of Point of View slips, but nothing horribly egregious to pull me out of the stories for more than a second.

Because of the mastery in manipulating emotions, I would say several of the stories are not fit for a day when you are feeling down, so I will categorize them here (mild SPOILERS):
Something for Nothing: Comeuppance
Abandoned: Anger and Mostly sad.
Reflection: Sad
Class Reunion: Pulled in many directions.
Easy Come: Sad
Taking the Fall: Sad
Love Never Lost: It will make you mad, but the ending is so worth it.
Costly Legacy: Awesome story of sacrifice, but ultimately quite sad.
Christmas Found: SUPER FEEL GOOD! Read this one if you need a pick-me up!
Another Day: Read it on a day when you feel like life is boring, and count your blessings!
Through His Eyes: Whimsical and Cute.
Their Place: I had a hard time keeping engaged with this one.
Killing Him With Kindness: Emotional Rollercoaster.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Something for Everyone
By Lucille
I've read one of D.R. Shoultz's novels and thought I'd give his short stories a try. I'm glad I did. I particularly liked his stories that included pets. "Abandoned" had me in tears several times, and so did "A Christmas Found."

"Something for Nothing", a story about a couple stealing pension funds from their aunt, was a little twisted, but it definitely was dramatic and I didn't anticipate the shocking ending.

All in all, a good collection of stories and well worth the price. There is something for everyone.

Pleased to Recommend This Anthology
By Norm Hamilton
I thoroughly enjoyed the dozen short stories in this collection. Each is of a length that can be digested in one sitting with the satisfaction of being fulfilled at the end, never left hanging. The author reveals each of the stories so it is unique and easily discernible from the others. I appreciated being able to read each without having the feeling of repetition. Well done Mr. Shoultz.

Shoultz’s writing style draws the reader in during the first paragraph or two in anticipation of what is about to take place. His characters include everyday people in relationships, frustration and devious plans. Each has a story arc that takes the reader from where the characters begin … to where their journey takes them. From the unusual behaviour of a couple in “Something for Nothing” to the depth of love expressed in “Killing Him with Kindness,” you will be entertained by clear, concise storytelling.

Two of the stories, “Easy Come” and “A Christmas Found” are Award winning pieces. The author is offering the profits from Amazon sales as a benefit for the North Carolina animal shelters.

I am pleased to recommend this anthology to both lovers of the shorts and to anyone who would like to taste the treasure that is the short story.

Photography for Everyone: The Cultural Lives of Cameras and Consumers in Early Twentieth-Century Japan, by Kerry Ross

The Japanese passion for photography is almost a clich, but how did it begin? Although Japanese art photography has been widely studied this book is the first to demonstrate how photography became an everyday activity. Japan's enthusiasm for photography emerged alongside a retail and consumer revolution that marketed products and activities that fit into a modern, tasteful, middle-class lifestyle. Kerry Ross examines the magazines and merchandise promoted to ordinary Japanese people in the early twentieth century that allowed Japanese consumers to participate in that lifestyle, and gave them a powerful tool to define its contours. Each chapter discusses a different facet of this phenomenon, from the revolution in retail camera shops, to the blizzard of socially constructive how-to manuals, and to the vocabulary of popular aesthetics that developed from enthusiasts sharing photos. Ross looks at the quotidian activities that went into the entire picture-making process, activities not typically understood as photographic in nature, such as shopping for a camera, reading photography magazines, and even preserving one's pictures in albums. These very activities, promoted and sponsored by the industry, embedded the camera in everyday life as both a consumer object and a technology for understanding modernity, making it the irresistible enterprise that Eastman encountered in his first visit to Japan in 1920 when he remarked that the Japanese people were "almost as addicted to the Kodak habit as ourselves."

Review
"Kerry Ross uses amateur photography splendidly as a lens on the emergence of dynamic consumer cultures in Japan before World War II. Gender, marketing, aesthetics, work and leisure, and 'middlebrow' aesthetics all enter the picture—making for a major contribution to our growing appreciation of early 20th-century modernity."—John W. Dower, MIT

"This study is highly original and provides a much needed account of prewar Japanese photography as a modernity-making social formation. The research opens up whole new worlds to historians of Japanese culture, commerce, gender, everyday life, and even nationalism/democracy."—Paul D. Barclay, Associate Professor of History, Lafayette College

'Tis better to travel hopefully...
By FictionFan
When middle-aged Henry Pulling attends the cremation of his mother, he meets his mother's sister, Aunt Augusta, a woman he knows only from old family photographs. It seems Aunt Augusta was something of the black sheep of the family, her distinctly racy and unconventional lifestyle making her unwelcome. But Henry finds himself drawn towards her, her frank stories of a life full of incident providing a contrast to his own rather dull and lonely existence as a retired bank manager in the respectable little community of Southwood. And soon Augusta entices Henry to join her on some of her journeys, first on the Orient Express to Istanbul and later to South America.

This is a gentle little comedy without any of the profundity of Greene's major works but still with a certain amount of charm. Published in 1969, at a time when Greene was in his mid-60s, it does rather read like a tolerant older man's view of the 'permissive' society of the '60s, with its focus on 'free love' and incessant pot-smoking. However, through Aunt Augusta's stories, we are also taken on a light trip back through the century, though her storytelling technique makes it hard to pin down the truth of any event she is describing. From running a church for dogs in Brighton to her rather seedy career in France, from possibly having something to do with the Resistance to consorting with Nazi war criminals, Augusta's exuberant zest for life manages somehow to overcome Henry's normal repugnance for anything not quite respectable. The lesson he must learn from Augusta is the simple one that there is a difference between the tedium of merely existing and the joy of experiencing life.

The writing is, of course, excellent, especially the stories of their travels and the various places they pass through. It's not a travelogue, so there are no tourist brochure style descriptions – instead, it's a vague, impressionistic picture of the process of travelling and the places passed by as seen through Henry's untutored, and often uninterested, eye. The reader is more likely to be told about the availability of ham sandwiches than the great architecture of a given town. This changes a little when they head off to South America – in this section, we begin to get a much clearer picture both of the natural world and the strange and rather corrupt society Henry finds himself sucked into.

The humour runs at a consistently gentle level throughout, never becoming riotously funny, but never getting lost either. Unfortunately a good deal of the humour is centred on Aunt Augusta's younger lover, Wordsworth, a man from Sierra Leone, and to modern eyes his portrayal feels horribly stereotyped at best and somewhat racist at worst. In fact, given Greene's age and the time of writing, Wordsworth is actually rather affectionately portrayed – indeed, he's about the only likeable character, the only one with a true, warm and generous heart. But still, I found some of the dialect and his rather childish naivety made for pretty uncomfortable reading in places. Otherwise, however, the contrast between Henry's buttoned-up mentality and Augusta's free-wheeling acceptance of all life has to offer gives plenty of opportunity for Greene to quietly mock the society of the time.

This would not be the book I would recommend to people wanting to sample Greene for the first time. Much better to try one of his more serious novels where the depth of the subject matter tends to withstand dating a little better. In truth, I think profundity suits his style better than humour. But, overall, I found this a pleasurable if rather light read – one where the journey is more enjoyable perhaps than the destination.

Surely a masterpiece
By Philip Spires
Travels With My Aunt by Graham Greene

Henry Pulling is a recently retired bank manager. He was offered an arrangement after many years of devoted service when his bank was taken over by another. He is looking forward to spending more time with the dahlias that are his pride and joy, and also rubbing shoulders with his former customers in Southwood, an unremarkable London suburb that seems to be populated entirely by retired officers from the armed forces. He mentions Omo quite a lot and is vaguely embarrassed by the fact that he shares initials with a well known brand of sauce. And then he meets his long lost aunt, Augusta Bertram.

Henry's mother has just died. His father died forty years before. He never really knew the father and his relationship with his mother was perennially tense. After the funeral, Agatha takes him on one side and calmly informs him that his father was something of a rogue and that his "mother" was really his step-mother, his true biological mother being one of his father's bits on the side. Henry Pulling finds himself attracted to his aunt, not because she is something of an eccentric, unpredictable old bird, but also because she retains, somewhere, the secret of his own origins. When she suggests they travel together, he eagerly accompanies, despite the fact that he has never been one for straying far from the nest.

Graham Greene has Henry and Aunt Agatha travel as far afield as Brighton, Istanbul and South America. Together, via stories from Aunt Augusta's past, they relive the first half of the twentieth century, from late Victorian roots to 1960s drug culture, from fascism to dictators, from war to peace. Throughout, Henry Pulling comes across as a genial, predictable gent in his late fifties, whilst Aunt Augusta seems to be a confirmed member of Hell's Grannies. Europe - the world even - seems to be littered with her conquests, with hardly a country passing by without some faded memory of hers coming back to life.

As it unfolds, Travels With My Aunt reveals itself as a true masterpiece of twentieth century fiction. The characters really do live through the century's history, but the events are never pressed onto the surface of their lives. On the contrary, they are entwined within the fabric of Aunt Agatha's being, a character whose complexity unfolds as the story progresses.

Throughout Henry Pulling is a truly comic character. He seems out of his depth, nave, a product of an over-protected suburban existence, over-burdened with the assumptions of his upbringing. But he comes into his own and eventually it is no surprise when he describes his new life, which is almost as far removed from a suburban bank manager's office as it is possible to get. And, of course, the story's denouement, when it arrives, is also no surprise. And is not less because of that.

There are many laughs along the way, not least as a result of Henry's being constantly taken aback by his aunt's bluntness and lust for life. Particularly memorable, however, were scenes where Henry put his personal foot in it. On Paraguay's national day, he carries a red scarf on his aunt's advice so he can show allegiance to the ruling party and the dictator. He just happens to be outside the military and political headquarters when he sneezes and uses the scarf as a hankie. A nearby soldier records the snotting into the national emblem as deeply insulting and irreverent, duly beats him up and slaps him in jail. Situation comedy at its best.

Travels With My Aunt is quite simply a must read and must re-read book. Graham Greene's immense skill provides a simplicity of style and construction to communicate a complex plot alongside powerful characterisation, and all this accomplished with true but elegant economy. It is a beautifully crafted book, expertly written, full of surprises and humour, all set against a deadly serious plot: surely a masterpiece.

Dragged Away From His Dahlias
By Stephanie De Pue
"Travels with My Aunt" was penned by its greatly praised British author Graham Greene rather late in his long life, and his long, prolific, greatly-honored literary career. In fact, Greene wrote it past the point at which he divided his work into 'novels--' serious, like "The Power and the Glory," and 'entertainments,' lighter, like "Our Man in Havana." He probably would, however, have called it an 'entertainment.' Mind you, this novel never has been a critical favorite; nor has the movie, starring Maggie Smith, who was Oscar-nominated for the role of Aunt Augusta, made from it. (Most of his books were filmed).

The novel is told in first person by its narrator Henry Pulling, a never-married, presumably virgin, stuffy, retired bank manager, looking forward to a lifetime of cultivating his suburban dahlias. At his mother's funeral, he meets his Aunt Augusta, absent from his life since his christening. She shakes him up, drags him on exotic travels, and gives him some better reasons to live. (It's noticeable that there's a certain family resemblance to Patrick Dennis's "Auntie Mame," penned roughly a decade earlier. But these two books involve protaganists at different ends of life: a boy, and a retiree, and, let's face it, anything written by Graham Greene, no matter how late in his career, has his touch, and his thoughts.)

The plot's episodic, and not as tight as some of the writer's great spy stories. But the book's well written. Furthermore, you can see the Greene touch in some of the book's flavorful characters. In addition to Aunt Augusta, there's the Turkish cop, Colonel Hakim, one of several powerful third world law 'enforcers' created by Greene. There's 'Tooley,' the airhead hippie girl met on the Orient Express (played by Cindy Williams, of "Laverne and Shirley," in the movie.) And 'Wordsworth,' as Augusta calls him, an emigrant from Sierra Leone, a part of the world with which Greene was very familiar, as he'd spent World War II there as a spy. Wordsworth (played by Lou Gossett in the film) is fiercely in love with Augusta, a woman at least twice his age, and devotes his life to her.

One of the more challenging results of the first-person narration is that the reader, like Henry, doesn't know what Aunt Augusta is up to, until we're told. There's a longish period, in terms of this short book, when Augusta is out of touch, and Henry thinks of really solidifying his suburban retirement -- as if it could be much more solid, he's already pretty well set in concrete -- by marrying a sad local spinster. In another interesting use of the first person, Greene does not always tell us what Henry's thinking: when the narrator at last realizes some of the central facts of his Aunt's life -- some of us might ask what took him so long -- he doesn't share his thought processes with us.

"Travels" is short, and funny. And the subject matter is touching: a man no longer young, discovering family he didn't know he had, rescued from a dread life cultivating his dahlias by that family. What could be bad?
