Only for the Ambitious

You should NOT buy this book if: 1) you are going to Hong-Kong for a week, and want to get the basics of the language. 2) you already know Mandarin or any other language using Chinese characters.
Why? The first 10 or so words you learn are different kinds of fruit. You have to memorize all these to be able to go on to the exercises. This may be fine if you intend to get a huge vocabulary, but for most beginners, 10 different fruits are not the most urgent need. The book goes on in the same way with chunks of specialised but not necessarily useful words.
The next problem is that hardly any Chinese characters are used, so you get little or no help from your possible previous knowledge of Chinese or Japanese. I bought the book, because it provided CDs with the text, and I still think that's its main advantage. I still haven't learnt Cantonese very well, but I've started using another book (Teach Yourself) in parallel, and that helps a lot.

I bought this book + CDs after I finished another Cantonese text for beginners. If you already have some knowledge on Cantonese, this book really helps you learning more words and colloquial expressions.
One thing I don't like about this book is that all the Cantonese sentences are written only in alphabet. If you already know Chinese characters, it is much easier to remember words and expressions if written in Chinese characters.

Great Course - Highly Recommended but not the easiest to get into if you know NO cantonese at first.

I bought this system AFTER purchasing and using the Pimsleur language system and practiced both systems at the same time and found that an excellent way to pick up the language. The pace of these lessons goes quickly and the speed is a conversational speed so it is extremely helpful to have a small familiarity with the language to really excel with this course. My family is from Canton and my grandmother was my tutor as well. I would have her listen to both language courses and she as a native speaker felt much more confident with this course than the Pimsleur course, which tends to teach more formal speech. I highly recommend it. Especially a good tool if you live near a Chinatown like I do and want to be able to order food or buy items and use your conversation for everyday tasks.

M. David Miller has been working in the field of assessment and evaluation for more than 25 years. He is a Professor in Research Methods and Evaluation at the University of Florida.��He is also the Director of the Collaborative Assessment and Program Evaluation Services, which conducts evaluation and assessments of public school programs and NSF grants at the UF.� As part of this work, he is also the Director of the University of Florida’s Quality Enhancement Plan, which is looking at ways to prepare undergraduates to compete in an international environment.� He has also been a co-Director of a state K-12 assessment program and was the data analyst for the Second International Mathematics Study.

Robert L. Linn is a Distinguished Professor emeritus of Education at the University of Colorado at Boulder.� He is a member of the National Academy of Education and Lifetime National associate of the National Academies.� He is a former President of the Division of Evaluation and Measurement of the American Psychological Association, former President of the National Council on Measurement in Education, former Vice President of the American Educational Research Association for the Division of Measurement and Research methodology, and former President of the American Educational Research Association.� He is widely published in educational measurement and has received several awards, including the ETS Award for Distinguished Service to Measurement, the E. L. Thorndike Award, the E. F. Lindquist Award, the National Council on Measurement in Education Career Award, and the American Educational Research Association Award for Distinguished Contributions to Educational Research.��

Ugh, what tortured language, using as many words as possible to convey a straightforward concept. I am *not* a fan of this textbook! I've used much better textbooks that have similar information in some of my other grad program classes. Not a keeper on my reference shelf.

The book is considered a classic. The 11th edition, content wise, is great. However, I am so upset that I can open this book ONLY through the Kindle app on my iPad. What is the publisher thinking? I told my professor and he is not considering the text for next semester. This will be a shame because the content is great.

A fun introduction to a lot of the important events in British history

This book is intended for young readers but adults will find it of interest too. From the ancient Britons to the New Millennium there are short but very informative brief accounts of the people and events that one should be familiar with if he or she wants to know the ins and outs of this nation's history.

There are plenty of humorous cartoons that illustrate this little book but that doesn't mean that the narrative talks down to the reader - it certain does not ! You can use this book as a quick reference or to give a youngster an overview of British history. You won't regret purchasing a copy (get the inexpensive paperback) of "Off With Their Heads!" because it really is a joy to read. I am pretty well versed in English history but I still found a few tidbits I didn't know before.
