About the Author
Neil Challis was born in Cambridge, UK. He studied mathematics at the University of Bristol and subsequently worked for some years as a mathematician in the British Gas Engineering Research Station at Killingworth. Since 1977, he has worked in the Mathematics Group, Sheffield Hallam University, UK and is currently head of that group. He obtained a PhD in mathematics from the University of Sheffield in 1988 and has taught mathematics to a wide variety of students, across the spectrum from first year engineers and other non-mathematicians who need access to mathematical ideas, techniques and thinking, to final year single honours mathematics students.

Harry Gretton was born in Leicester, UK. He studied mathematics at the University of Sheffield, obtaining his PhD from there in 1970. He has taught mathematics sciences since then, both at Sheffield University and Sheffield Hallam University, and has been a tutor with the Open University since it was conceived. He has taught many varied students on many varied mathematically-related courses. In recent years he has developed a particular interest in the impact of technology on the way mathematics is taught, practiced and assessed.

The AUTHORIZED paperback edition! Avoid bad facsimiles!

This review is for the 'Diamond Jubilee Edition' of "Secret Teachings of All Ages" paperback issued by the Philosophical Research Society in 1989 (1st pb edition - all b&w) and reprinted in 2000 (54 illustrations are in color - the rest in b&w). This is the best trade edition available of this incredible book. This edition has all of the illustrations from the original text reproduced in good quality (all in b&w in the 1989 edition - 54 illustrations in color and the rest in b&w for the 2000 PB edition). It also includes a couple of foldouts and a vellum overlay.

There are many facsimile editions out currently with no illustrations, or with poor reproductions of them. If you want to truly enjoy this book, seek out one of the authorized editions that made an effort to reproduce the text with the incredible illustrations intact. The original hardcover limited edition is a few feet tall. The edition that I saw was hand-bound and hand-colored, apparently intended for a Masonic library. It would break your coffee table. It was issued in 'reduced size' - still not a small book - in hardcover and in this paperback edition from the Philosophical Research Society. These are the editions that faithfully reproduce the original. I can not speak for the other editions, but I've seen enough complaints to want to advise buyers to seek out these authorized editions from Philosophical Research Society, and to avoid the rest.

(ask the bookseller to check the ISBN if the listing isn't clear about the edition - don't get fooled into buying a bad facsimile!)

These are some of the authorized HC reprint editions issued by PRS over the years, any of which are worth buying. I've not seen each edition, but it seems they have color illustrations that are reprinted in b&w in the 1989 pb 'Diamond Jubilee Edition':
1977 Hardcover Edition (13 x 2 x 23 inches) from Philosophical Research Society ISBN is: 0-89314-538-6
1978 Golden Anniversary HC edition from Philosophical Research Society ISBN is: 0-89314-539-4
2008 reprint HC edition (12.8 x 1.8 x 18.5 inches) from Philosophical Research Society ISBN is: 0-89314-546-7

AVOID THE CREATE-SPACE EDITION (ISBN: 1-46101-313-5)! It is really bad, full of typos and the few pictures that are included look awful. The 'reader's guide edition' in PB from Tarcher (ISBN: 1-58542-250-9) only has half of the original illustrations, but has the unabridged text. There are a few other editions available that I have not reviewed.

So, if you are ordering online, ask the bookseller who the publisher is and check the ISBN before purchasing. This book is available in many, many editions, some are humungous and gorgeous books- some are poorly reproduced and edited.

This most wonderful book arrived impeccably in all ways; within the time frame expected, wrapped cleanly in plastic, and having a nice new crispness to the pages as I opened this marvelous book. I would highly recommend anyone interested in esotericism and any of the healing arts to get this for their collection, AND to order it from The Philosophical Research Society, where this book is published from.

If you manage an Ubuntu server, get this book!

I've been a network admin at my current company for a few years and recently, we started adding Ubuntu based servers into the network to handle services and web apps that are better suited to run off of Linux, than Windows. Since my knowledge is not ideal with it comes to managing and troubleshooting Ubuntu server issues, I decided to read up on it the subject to further my knowledge.

I picked up a few books including Troubleshooting Ubuntu Server from Packt Publishing and wow, I cannot believe the information that this book has provided me with. It covers almost everything that I deal with on a daily basis and a lot more.

The book covers in detail: package management, networking, authentication, monitoring, virtualization, and OpenStack. Although we're not at the point of using OpenStack, we do use everything else. Reading through the book I have not only come to a better understanding of the system and how it functions, but how to fix some issues, while coming up with solutions for management and monitoring.

I used this book to setup a centralized repo on my network with auto updates pointing towards my repo for the rest of the servers and to setup some automation with SSH and cron, which is pretty awesome. I also am in the process of setting up Nagios and hope to play with Puppet when I have some free time.

All in all, I have to say that this book is one that will be on my desk for quite some time instead of collecting dust on a book self somewhere. It has shown itself to be a valuable resource for me and a great investment in my knowledge. If you have to have one book to help you manage and troubleshoot your servers, Troubleshooting Ubuntu Server is the book you need.

Helping Me Get Up To Speed On Ubuntu Server

I purchased this ebook directly from Packt Publishing. I was given responsibility to administer Ubuntu servers and needed a quick jumpstart in troubleshooting skills. While I have general knowledge in the area, I felt I needed more. This book has helped me gain the knowledge I need to be productive. Client is migrating from Red Hat to Ubuntu and I needed some background in Debian package management, which the package management chapter supplied. The networking chapter was also a good refresher for me. I have purchased many publications from Packt and I continue to be impressed with the breadth of their offerings.

Finally a book that only the Ubuntu Linux Server version discussed. Here you get a very good and deep insight into the issues networks and processes. Then you get a lot of hints about optimizations. Here I found tips that I haven’t found in any other book. Finally, there is a comprehensive overview of virtualization. In particular, the infrastructure with OpenStack is described. Exactly on this book I’ve been waiting a long time and I would buy it again at any time.

Mahmoody illuminates the horror of the crime of international child abduction and the often hopeless complexity and expense of combatting it. After her own harrowing escape with her six-year-old daughter, Mahtob, from her abusive husband in Iran, Mahmoody returned to America, wrote her bestselling book, witnessed its transformation into a hit movie, and became an active lecturer and frequent talk-show guest. But none of these activities distracted her from the main focus of her life--her daughter, for whose presence Mahmoody daily gave thanks and for whose safety she constantly feared, always expecting her ex-husband to show up to take his revenge. The author's celebrity attracted many heartbroken parents to her, men and women who had had their children abducted abroad by foreign-born mates (Muslim cultures are heavily represented among the abductors). From these stories, Mahmoody distills some cautionary advice for anyone contemplating intercultural marriage. Betty Mahmoody is a pioneer for domestic/international/kidnapping rights

I purchased a used copy of this book and was very surprised to see a "discarded" stamp on it. This is the continuing story of Betty Mahmoody and her daughter Mahtob. Both miraculously escaped the abuse, beatings, and imprisonment of Betty's husband from desolate Iran. It was (and still is) impossible for any women to leave Iran (or any Islamic State in the Middle East) with her child without her husband's explicit permission that is why Betty's story is so enthralling and riveting. When she returned to their home in MI she wrote her best-selling story, "Not Without My Daughter."

"For The Love Of A Child" picks up where the whirlwind "Not Without My Daughter" left off. The book details how Betty and her daughter have adjusted in the recent years since being imprisoned by her husband. Her newer book also discusses her immediate family's reaction to their circumstances after they came home.

The book also discusses several domestic/international cases that are just as sad, shocking, and interesting as Betty's case. I was especially interested in the story about Zana and Nadia Muhsen. Both young ladies grew up in England and were sold into slavery by their Yemeni father. There is a book about their ordeal which I look forward to reading, appropriately titled Sold: One Woman's True Account of Modern Slavery. Betty wrote the introduction to that tragic story.

Never one to be a shrinking violet, Betty does not mince words or try to cover up anything. The book also discusses the Hague Convention and how and where mothers (and fathers) in similar circumstances can get help. Although some of the stories may seem somewhat date in the year 2006, none of the passion and emotion articulated could ever been described as outdated in the least. Betty Mahmoody is a pioneer for domestic/international/kidnapping rights.

Very humorous and fun read

Love all the books in this series. Calame has crafted great and believable characters. Very laugh-out-loud humor. And the audio version is amazing. I highly recommend this author.

Delivers a Funny Beat

The boys from Swim the Fly by Don Calame are back! Beat the Band isn't exactly a sequel to Swim the Fly, but it does have the same characters. Once I heard about Calame's second book I had to have it. While the first book by Calame was narrated by Matt, Beat the Band has Coop's tale to tell. It isn't essential to read Swim the Fly, but after reading Beat the Band, you'll want to. Both books are hilarious.

It's tenth grade and the boys are upping the ante on their juvenile bets. For the summer, it was to see a real live naked girl. This school year? Cooper's aiming to tag the bases. Coop wants to hook up with model-looking Prudence Nash on the 10th grade health class project...but he's paired with the infamous "Hot Dog" Helen Harriwick. In the eyes of the teens at Lower Rockville High, this is social suicide. So he does what every teen in the depths of loserdom does to reclaim a bit of cool.. forms a band. If Matt, Cooper, and Sean's band, Arnold Murphy's Bologna Dare, wins the Battle of the Bands, they will rocket to cool in no time. Despite the fact none of them can play an instrument, they've never rehearsed, and they have no idea what they're doing. But then Coop spends more time with Helen and discovers what he was missing.

I praised Swim the Fly for its combination of humor with heart. It's good to see Beat the Band doesn't fail in this department. Once again, the characters are somewhat rude and juvenile, the humor might be crude, and the adults in the novel might as well as be teens themselves, but what Calame does so well is make it all work wonderfully. I enjoyed the character development in the first book, Beat the Band gives readers another taste of that. Once again, I have to compare it to Judd Apatow movies - high on crude, laughs, and heart.

Cooper is very juvenile and his POV provides the typical boy viewpoint towards girls and sex. It reminded me of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer quote actually.

Cordelia: Well, does looking at guns make you wanna have sex?
Xander: I'm 17. Looking at linoleum makes me wanna have sex.

But as Cooper gets to actually know Helen and Prudence, his viewpoint shifts to something less superficial and caveman like. He sees woman as more than sex objects - as much as you can expect a teen boy to change. A reader can find the humor in Cooper's utter clueless nature and rejoice when he finally gets some sense.

Don Calame takes the staples of high school comedy - Battle of the Bands, being partnered with a social outcast, teen boys' hormones -- and injects new life into them. The band antics are hysterical and terribly misguided. One of my favorite chapters was when the boys chose the outfits for their "look"...and ended up with three completely different looks, resulting in looking like surreal Village People castoffs. I won't reveal the rest of the funny situations in detail - golf shop antics, band practice and more but trust me, you'll laugh.

The situations may be crude and not for all, but these boys, despite their clueless nature, are oddly lovable and Beat the Band delivers beat after beat of the funny.

"You won't be sorry; I promise... this is going to be epic!" -Cooper Redmond... Famous last words, yes? Maybe, but that all depends on how you look at it. Even when you lose, sometimes you win something much better.

Although in the same vein of funny as SWIM THE FLY with most of the same cast, BEAT THE BAND (Swim The Fly #2) is a completely different story. To be honest the fact that this second book is written from Cooper's pov had me going in a bit weary from the start. Coop's brazen and often overly juvenile personality, albeit hysterical at times, made him a much less likable character in comparison to Matt, who was just so darn endearing as he narrated his way through book one. But I have to say those concerns were completely a non issue. I'm not saying there weren't some blatantly foul displays of inappropriate male adolescents from Mr. Cooper, because there most definitely were, more than a few and they were laugh-out-loud funny. But we also find there is a lot more to Coop than fart jokes and double entendres in this second installment. Fortunately author Don Calame saw fit to introduce us to the many layers of Cooper Redmond; as he navigates his way through embarrassing Sex Ed Health Class assignments, the school pariah, an out of work dad, hawt mean girls, his first kiss, the battle of the bands and his conscious.

This is a definite equal opportunity series that teens and adults of both genders will relate to and enjoy. I'm a 32 year old mom of 2 boys and I loved both books. I highly recommend the audio versions, which have provided countless hours of entertainment and distraction for me on the evil treadmill. Narrator Nick Podehl expertly gives a voice and a very distinct individuality to each character. I really hope Calame plans to round out the group and put out a third book from Sean's pov.

This book is good enough that it should be updated to include the major enterprise initiatives; e.g., ecommerce, the role of eforms in document management, etc.. In the rapid evolution of document automation technologies, 1995 was a very long time ago.

Through detailed case studies, Risse-Kappen shows that the Europeans affected security decisions concerning vital U.S. interest during the 1950-1953 Korean war, the 1958-1963 test ban negotiations, and the 1962 Cuban missile crisis--all during a span of time in which the U.S. enjoyed undisputed economic and military supremacy in the alliance. He situates these case studies within a theoretical framework demonstrating that the European influence on decision-making processes in Washington worked through three mechanisms: norms prescribing timely consultations among the allies, use of domestic pressures for leverage in transatlantic interactions, and transnational and transgovernmental coalitions among societal and bureaucratic actors. The book's findings have important repercussions for the post-Cold War era in that they suggest the transatlantic security community is likely to survive the end of the Soviet threat.

I want my own dream machine!

Ms. Rylon captured my attention with Nice and Naughty and kept it with Dream Machine. Becca and Kurt sizzled but this story wasn't only hot, it was romance at its best! I'm holding my breath for Luke's story, I hope Ms. Rylon doesn't let me suffocate. :)

Buy this book!

I'm serious. I'm an avid reader and I genuinely like most of what I read. However, in the case of Jayne Rylon's Dream Machine, I think it's safe to say, like is a bit mild to describe my feelings.

What an amazing story! Really amazing. Jayne came up with a unique plot and two characters who were so REAL, I feel as if I know them. Kurt was the epitomy of the tortured alpha (my absolute favorite combination in a romance hero) and his genuinely true affection for Becca took my breath away. There was truly nothing that man wouldn't do for her.

Go buy this book. It's worth every penny and every minute of your time.

Concept was Interesting Story wasn't

I like Jayne Rylon's writing but this left me cold. I have to agree with the writer who gave the book two stars. I just couldn't get into the book and it was just boring. I couldn't finish it and I am putting it down hoping to finish it. The sex scenes were even boring because it was more about the experiment than the two people involved. Jayne does a lot better than this and a lot of reviews were good but this just may not have been the book for me. It happens sometimes but do not let this review deter you from buying her work. She has great books.
