About the Author
Anne McCaffrey, one of the world’s most popular authors, is best known for her Dragonriders of Pern� series. She was the first woman to win the two top prizes for science fiction writing, the Hugo and Nebula awards. She was also given the American Library Association’s Margaret A. Edwards Award for Lifetime Literary Achievement in Young Adult Fiction, was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, and was named a Science Fiction Writers of America Nebula Grand Master. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1926, McCaffrey relocated to Ireland in the 1970s, where she lived in a house of her own design, named Dragonhold-Underhill. She died in 2011.

Dragonriders of Pern (Kindle Edition)

First, I'd like to say that I love these books. I re-read them ever couple years and it's a fresh story with new meaning each time. For me it's a timeless series.

I offer many thanks to Anne MaCaffery and her son Todd McCaffery who has picked up the reins of story telling with the Realms of Pern.

As for the Kindle Edition of this book, I am sorely disappointed in the typographical errors. In a time when we have simple spell checking on just about every application we use, it's depressing to see this digital media plagued with such inconsideration for the reader.

The spelling of the character names are misspelled, sometimes from paragraph to paragraph. There are major typographical mistakes in connection words that require the reader to read, and then re-read the entire sentence to discern the actual word intended as different words could change then entire feel and meaning of the sentence.

Paying roughly the same for this Kindle Edition as I would for a new mass-market paperback, I question why anyone would pay full price when a print copy can be acquired, used, at a faction of the cost.

The Kindle Edition is a sad disservice to the readers and fans of Anne McCaffery.

Del Rey and Random House Digital should be ashamed of themselves for releasing such a poor quality product!!

EXCELLENT STORY, HORRIBLE EDITION

In The Dragonriders of Pern, Anne McCaffrey creates a stunning and richly detailed world. It's clear on reading these stories that they are very dear to McCaffrey's heart. Her blend of science, music and human drama are supported by a wholly believable mythology which bridges the gap between our earth and Pern.
Unfortunately, this edition was hastily thrown together without any regard for the author's hard work. On seemingly every page there are typographical errors so severe that McCaffrey's spell is broken. Character names constantly shift spelling. Words are misspelled, mixed up and changed to the point that the prose completely falls apart. At times geographic locations on Pern are switched with character names...this is a work of Science Fiction/Fantasy but when the place where you live starts talking all believability goes out the window. The sloppy editing of the edition was so bad I ended up buying individual copies of Dragonflight, Dragonquest and The White Dragon. I noticed none of the errors I saw in the three-in-one volume.
I highly recommend reading Dragonflight, Dragonquest, and The White Dragon, but save yourself the confusion and disappointment of this three-in-one edition. Buy each separately.

This is the first book I bought on my kindle and I was sorely disappointed in this version of the books. There were many errors in all three books and it left so many plots unexplained. I ended up buying the full versions of the original books and wish I hadn't wasted my money on this one.

My first introduction to Wicca and still my favorite.

The chapter on ethics and safety is one of the most important. The most thorough explanation of the Law of Three that I have ever found. So many books coming out now on New Age and Occult topics are failing to provide this basic, essential information that protects you from having unintended bad results from your spells. It's hard to believe this book was written over 20 years ago, it is still fresh. I'm so glad she came out with the reprint, so it can be circulated again. I use Words of Power to help myself in school, in my job, with my relationships, finding a house, my kitty's health, my garden, just about everything. Enjoy your own copy of this book, and Blessed Be.

Excellent Primer on Magic, Wicca, I Ching & Astrology

Whenever someone asks me to explain more about how magic works, I always start with two steps:
Magic 101: Watch the _Star_Wars_ trilogy (Yes, the movies) and listen to every word they say about "The Force" - it is exactly how Magic works. (Yes, it sounds strange, but trust me on this one)
Magic 102: Read _Positive_Magic_ to take the basic _Star_Wars_ introduction and get it explained in more detail and in a more "traditional" learing environment.
There are many books on the subject, but very few would I recommend to a beginner as most are exploitive or sensationalist. _Positive_Magic_ is always my first recommendation in reading materials. It provides a clear, logical explanation to Magic, Wicca (a magical religeous tradition), I Ching (a Chinese divination oracle) and Astrology (a divination tools used by various cultures throughout the world).
It provides a very balanced, thorough and non-judgemental view of its topics in an easy to read and understand format.
Buy It. You'll love it.

Magic Abounds in this Witty, Wonderful Book

Everyone should read this book! Even if you have only a passing curiosity about Wicca, Ms. Weinstein provides a wonderful primer on "the Craft" and its history that makes for compelling reading. Plus you get delightful instructions on tossing the coins (I Ching); reading the Tarot (a tool for opening up to your own intuition); and writing "Words of Power" (think of these as incantations, prayers, or affirmations, depending upon your personal beliefs). Best of all, Ms. Weinstein writes in a witty, down-to-earth style with one-liners that are sure to crack you up!

A cute variaton in the Harem genre

This is a cute variation of the Harem genre. The ubiquitously over-courteous, soft-spoken Japanese guy is vigorously pursued by a variety of women (in this case, of different species of monster).

The comedy is good. Again, very stereotypically harem-manga, but it still works quite well. There's also a glut of very bad (humorously bad) puns, most of which had to have been added by the translators, or at least adapted well.

The flirtation is just at the edge of sexual, so don't expect the light-hearted, childlike atmosphere of "Oh, My Goddess!", but (of course) anything outright sexual is inevitably interrupted by the someone or some event. Plenty of bare monsters' chests and even a hind end or two, but I'd guess it would be a strong PG-13 or weak R rating.

Overall, a cute variation on the harem genre, with enough creativity that I'm going to be picking up the 2nd volume.

Adorable manga series

Adorable manga series! As someone who isn't much into harems I have to say I enjoy this one a lot. It's different with it's cast and it's humor is spot on! Though the manga does say it's recommended for ages 16 and older I'm going to have to say that it should be 18 or older. This series contains sexual content and slang and fully features breasts. So I don't think it would be a good idea for a 16 year old to be bringing this to their high school.

Other than that really recommend it!

Allen E. Ivey received in Ed.D. from Harvard. He is Distinguished University Professor (Emeritus) at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and is currently President of Microtraining Associates, an educational publishing firm. An A.B.P.P. in counseling psychology, Dr. Ivey is a past-president and Fellow of the Division of Counseling Psychology of the American Psychological Association and is been a life member of American Counseling Association. He has published over 25 books and 200 articles in his career. His works have been translated into multiple languages. Paul Pedersen's innovations in multi-cultural counseling and therapy have made immense contributions to our profession. He has served as Master Lecturer for APA, has taught throughout the world, and authored or edited 40 books on multicultural counseling. Mary Bradford Ivey has her doctorate from the University of Massachusetts and is currently Vice President of Microtraining Associates. She is a former school counselor and she received special recognition when her program was named one of the ten most effective in the United States. Lions and Tigers and Scandal Among the NYPD by Peeps Galloway, Gossipmonger (And proud of it!)

Oh, Dear Reader, one of our own has fallen. And fallen hard.

Detective Devin Antonio (highlighted in this column last spring and summer!) has been mysteriously suspended.

Apparently (Oh, my, don't you just love that word?) he found himself at the scene of a robbery last night. The suspect was apparently (there it is again) escaping as the detective arrived, so he apparently (oh, joy!) felt the need to not only slap on the handcuffs, but also use his size and prowess to subdue and control the situation.

I'm shocked and downtrodden. I'm horrified and sympathetic. I'm literally unable to get out of bed.

Kidding!

Though, NYPD, I'm, of course, on your side. I stand for truth and justice above all.

Apparently, there are some secrets in the great detective's past he failed to share with those most important in his life. Will this derail his flirtations with a certain travel writer he's been seen around town with? Will this get him (gasp) fired?

As documented in this column, he's helped solve some high-profile crimes over the last several months, including the Jenkins Scandal and the Rutherford Theft. But those triumphs are unlikely to sway the D.A., who's apparently tired of explaining to the attorney general about why corruption is so prevalent on our beloved island of Manhattan.

Maybe a hotel heiress or two will do something more scandalous next week…though I'm not counting on it. (Kidding again! I so am!)

I dream of you day and night.

"Yeah, yeah," Calla Tucker muttered at the text message she'd received nearly a month ago and had yet to erase.

She couldn't imagine brooding detective Devin Antonio had actually meant the words. And if, by some miracle, he had, he probably hadn't meant them for her.

Of course her sarcastic response, Are you feeling okay? hadn't helped matters. He hadn't responded to that question at all, and when she'd tried to talk to him about the message, he'd acted as if he hadn't known what she was talking about.

Yet she'd left her best friend's wedding reception early because he hadn't shown up as he'd promised and now she was scooting around Manhattan in a cab, racking up a fare that she was going to need a loan to pay for, simply because she was worried about him.

"You want me to wait again?" the cabbie asked as he pulled up to the police station.

She glanced at the amount, winced, then handed the driver a wad of cash. "No, thanks. I think this is my last stop."

She'd already called Devin's cell phone and sent half a dozen text messages, checked his apartment and phoned Paddy's bar across the street from the precinct house—his usual haunt—all with no results. If he wasn't at work, she was out of ideas.

Wearing a full-length, navy blue taffeta bridesmaid's dress and a sprinkling of white flowers in her hair, she got a number of stares and two whistles before she yanked open the door and strode inside.

"I need to see Detective Antonio, please," she said to the bored-looking clerk, snapping gum as she lorded over the small, dingy waiting room from behind a high, faded-wood counter.

The clerk tapped on her computer, then announced, "Antonio's off duty."

He certainly promised to take the day off, Calla thought peevishly. And if a luxurious and wildly romantic wedding didn't get him to finally make a move on her, she wasn't sure anything would do the trick.

And yet, here she was, making an idiot of herself chasing after him.

"What about Lieutenant Meyer?" she asked the clerk.

This got a reaction. Staring down at Calla, the clerk raised her eyebrows—which were dyed purple. "You got an appointment?"

"No, but he's a good friend." She reached into her bag and pulled out the piece of cake she'd put in a plastic baggie to bring to Devin. "A mutual friend of ours got married tonight, so I brought him some cake."

Along with her proof of friendship, she gave the clerk a broad smile.

In return, she received a narrow-eyed glare.

Having lived in New York for six years, Calla knew she should be used to this kind of suspicious response by now. But she was from Texas, for heaven's sake. Beauty queen smiles and big blond hair were both a birthright and an entree into any event, anytime. She had no idea how to deal with Purple Eyebrow People.

"What color is that?" the clerk asked suddenly.

Calla shifted her gaze to the cake. "My friend Shelby insisted on making her own wedding cake and really wanted the roses to be aqua, but I think they came out icy-green. Still it's—"

"On your head," the clerk clarified.

"Oh. It's a mix of golden-blond with champagne highlights. I had a great girl who did it back in Texas, but it was a challenge to find somebody here who didn't charge three hundred dollars." She leaned closer, so she wouldn't be overheard. A woman's stylist was a private matter, after all. "Eventually, I found this great color specialist named Kirk. He's at Tangles on Bleecker in the West Village. Tell him Calla sent you, and he'll give you a ten-percent discount."

"Cool."

An instant later, the door to Calla's right buzzed as the clerk released the lock leading to the station's inner sanctum.

Connections. This town was all about connections.

With a bit more confidence—something she sorely needed to counteract the prissy flowers in her hair—she walked down the hall toward the squad room where Devin's desk was located. The couple of times she'd been there, she'd noticed his lieutenant's office in the corner. Devin had always spoken pretty highly of his boss, which meant he'd grunted and shrugged when she'd asked what it was like to work for Meyer.

Knocking tentatively on the closed door, she jolted when a deep, authoritative voice called out, "Come in!"

The office was fairly small, containing a wooden desk, a guest chair and a bookcase packed haphazardly with magazines and stacks of papers. A man of about fifty with dark brown hair graying at the temples sat behind the desk. He started to give her an impatient stare, but his expression turned into a charming smile as his gaze raked her body. He rose. "Can I help you?"

At least somebody was happy to see her. "I'm looking for Detective Antonio."

The smile disappeared. "He's not here."

"So they told me out front. I was hoping you'd know where he was. He promised he'd come to my friend's wedding, but he didn't show up. He's not at home, and he won't answer his phone. I'm worried."

"Antonio can take care of himself."

"I'm sure he can. Mind if I sit?" She dropped into the guest chair before he could refuse. "How about some cake?" she asked, holding out the piece she'd shown the reception clerk.

With a sigh, he sat behind his desk and took the cake. "You're his girlfriend?" he asked.

Well, I've been trying… "No, just a friend." Meyer said nothing for several moments. "You have a boyfriend?"

"No."

"I always thought Antonio was a sharp guy." He shrugged. "Truth is, he's been suspended."

Calla felt the blood drain from her face. "Since when?"

"A couple hours ago."

Explaining why he'd bailed on the wedding. But he could have called her. Maybe she and her gang—as he liked to call her and her friends Shelby and Victoria—could help. "For what?"

"I'm sorry, I can't say. It's an internal matter."

"How much trouble is he in?"

"A lot."

"He could lose his job?"

"Definitely."

Though Devin was closemouthed about his feelings, his life, his past, well, pretty much everything, she knew he valued being a cop above everything else. "But he's a great cop."

"I think so."

"Then why—" She stopped as the lieutenant shook his head. He wouldn't budge. "Any idea where I can find him?"

"Try Paddy's."

"Already did."

"O'Leary's Pub, then. Two blocks east."

"Thanks," she said, rising. He flashed a bright smile. "Anytime." Even though she wore four-inch heels, Calla walked to the pub.

Hadn't she strutted across dozens of pageant stages?

Hadn't she paid her way through college with said pageant scholarship winnings and graduated at the top of her journalism class? Hadn't she made a life for herself in the media capital of the world?

So why was her stomach clenched at the thought of seeing Devin? At the confrontation to come?

Gee, Calla, can't imagine why you'd be nervous.

Maybe because she knew he'd been suspended before. A fact he'd told her, almost offhand, though he'd refused to give details.

Personal reasons relating to an open case was the official line, and Devin, being such an effusive guy—ha, ha—had, naturally, not filled in the blanks. With little to go on, and out of character for her, she'd been intimidated to probe him further about his clearly painful past.

Apparently that day had now come.

She was looking forward to challenging that Irish-and-Italian temper. Ha ha.

Concise and Informative Close Quarters Battle Manual

This book is the real deal. It's concise, extremely clearly explained and illustrated, and a great guide for anyone who wants to think more seriously about how to protect themselves and the people they care about. If you're reading this review, you're probably more thoughtful about this than the average first-world inhabitant who has lived in relative safety since birth and tends to take safety for granted; but there is still a wealth of valuable observations in here, all clearly the thoughts and lessons of smart people who have spend professional lifetimes thinking about these issues. Examples include:

- telling the police you're armed when you call them, so there's a lower chance they shoot you when they arrive
- under which circumstances speed is better protection against bullets than cover
- how to use doors to your tactical advantage

Highly recommended for anyone who doesn't have a strong background in close quarters battle, and a useful reference even for those who do. As with any instruction manual, there are a lot of things left unsaid, including: how to move properly, how to shoot, how to apply basic first aid, how to triage and employ ad hoc weapons, how to plan (what to carry, etc.). It would have been great to see some more of this laid out as a baseline, but as is the manual still stands as a concise, articulate, extremely well-informed reference.

Outstanding product from Special Tactics

This book is a must-have for civilians and tactical professionals alike. As a military officer and concerned citizen, it is refreshing to see someone address the issue of self-defense in this manner as the frequency of small-scale, dangerous attacks against the general population is increasing rapidly. The easy-to-follow diagrams make the concepts very easy to pick up, especially for those who have little experience in the field and may be intimidated by the complexity of close quarters battle.
For the tactical professional, this manual addresses the often overlooked training step of individual tactics. Too often, training progresses from individual technical skills and leaps straight to team or collective tactical skills, leaving a void where the individual tactical building blocks were needed. This manual is the answer to that missed step, providing law enforcement and military personnel alike the knowledge and competency to operate individually if need be.

I loved the scenes hero saves heroine. He was in love and he would do anything to claim her.

I love this read!!!! I love a good Regency Romance and Ms. Beaton wrote a good one in this read. (I only recommend if you understand the period of when it was written as it explains why characters acted certain way.) The hero is a strong alpha male that dresses as a dandy. So heroine doesn't take him seriously at first. Hero doesn't let that stop him, he fall instantly for heroine and is hot in pursuit.

'Silken Bonds' is part 2 of a series but can be read stand alone. Hero falls instantly for the heroine but her guardian has taught her that being with a man is weakness. So hero pulls all the stops to court her. He will bribe staff, ask former interest to play act a role to get close to the family, he buys house next door to her, he watches/stalks her, he finds out what she likes and does what he needs to do to keep her interested in seeing him, he will beg, he will try seduce, he will be her knight in shinning armor, and he will keep saving her countless times form dangers so he can finally claim her as his own.

The book has several twist and turns. This includes some scary situations that require he to save heroine several times, because her family has jewels would-be thiefs want. I loved these scenes, especially the final scene. He may look like a dandy but he fought like a man!!! He is older and more experienced. Heroine is na�ve and innocent, but was raised to think like a man. So hero has to be creative to try to win her over, but he is really all for equal rights and proves to her that he wants her as his equal!!!

The other subplot is they are trying to find out who her biological parents are but find that someone doesn't want them to know. I found this read exciting because of the action scenes, extremes hero goes to be able to see heroine and who doesn't want to read a dashing gentleman save a heroine :) There is strong chemistry between H/h and he is very romantic at times when thinking/describing her. However, all love scenes are behind closed doors. Most is heavy petting and kisses. It is a safe reads. Hero is loyal but his promiscuous past does come several times up. He makes sure heroine knows he only wants her several times. I believed him, because of the extremes he goes to win her over.

This is one of the better Chesney's of the few I have read. The characters are appealing, especially Lord Harry Danger who is a delight. The book is very short however and would be much better longer and more developed. I enjoyed reading it though, even if the pleasure only lasted a few hours!

Thing about this book it's simple and truly the best for someone like me . I am doing my part 1 as a radiology registra ( resident ) so this book just simplifies my life and put things into perspective in a very simple way for someone like me who still has a lot to cover including physics this came in handy simplified some aspect that gave me a headache wish I had this book earlier .

Clinical Radiology MADE RIDICULOUSLY SIMPLE

I recommend this book for every student in their 3rd or 4th year of medical school.
This book is fairly thin and can be read during the first week of a Radiology Clerkship. It comes along with a CD so that you can practice reading x-rays. The only draw back to this book is that it focuses on x-rays and provides no information on reading CTs and MRIs.

Thierry Zarcone is Senior Researcher at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris, based at the Ecole Practique des Hautes Etudes, Paris. He has held visiting professorships at Kyoto and Fribourg, Switzerland, and is an expert on Islamic Studies and the history of systems of thought in the Turko-Iranian region.

Angela Hobart is Executive Director of Centro Incontri Umani (CIU), Switzerland, Honorary Research Fellow in Anthropology at University College London, Honorary Reader at Goldsmiths College, University of London, Visiting Professor in Social Anthropolgoy at the Swiss Italian University, Lugano and Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute, London.
